It is a horrendous situation. Everything that can go wrong is going wrong. Even in this, we don't hear any civil unrest, they (the average citizen) seem to be just plodding along, working with what they have.

I think we often expect far worse from our neighbors than reality. 3 Mile Island caused no riots, looting or civil unrest, Chernobyl was the same. The big quake in San Fransisco in the 80s was not a looter's paridise.

My greatest concern, and lesson, from the Japaneese situation is that information from official sources is no more accurate than the rumor mill, and will put you at risk from day one. The Jap government, and the assisting governments, have know how serious this problem was from the first minute. Covering their butts was their primary concern, not the ruined lives and agony of the people.

There are still people sitting in shelters waiting for word to go home, when they have not been informed that their homes will be nuclear waste sites for 1,000 years.

I just don't see it that way. I've worked these kinds of disasters and getting correct information at the ground level is nearly impossible. I've been asked what my my assessment was and gave it based on what I knew at the time having been right there. You do your best. Sometimes you're right and sometimes you're wrong. The truth is the "government spokesperson" was probably getting the information from some staffer in the government that just got off the phone with some staffer in the electric company that got his information from a section manager that got his information from a job foreman that got his information from the guy that just got off shift. Ever play the telephone game? You see real quick how it changes. You can almost imagine the guy that got off shift watching the news and shaking his head. "That's not what I told them," is probably his thoughts.

Unless it's measurable like the downstream radiation then the old adage, "Believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear," is probably a good one.

I bet sarge has some magic tricks that would make you say "believe none of what you see and even less of what you hear".
That same phrase came up in a conversation with a fella the other day, so I showed him I could make a coin disappear, and asked him "do you still believe what you see?"
