In honor of our newest member, Elkchsr, here is another scenario for you. You are out enjoying the wilderness for whatever reason and you smell smoke. It's either a brush fire or a forest fire. What do you do?

Thank the lord and fish out me pack of smokes... I couldnt light up all day because I forgot my matches!

Or
Locate the source/direction of the smoke.
Decide from the volume of smoke how large the fire is.
Check wind direction & speed.
Head for the nearest waterhole or lake away from the fire if I cant circle round and get behind the fire.
Dive in and sit it out. (have to watch out for elephants, bears, & snakes)

Go back to my airplane and leave the earth. just like the birds. No aircraft......well need more info, would depend mostly on wind direction relative to me and known spots of safety.

If all else failed, start digging a ditch, get in my sleeping bag, put both space blankets on top, put dirt on the space blankets, and start remembering all the times I near froze to death. And be happy I ve had a good life.

Look for the direction of the smoke and head in the opposite direction find a area that has only scarce vegitation or a lake. If you find a lake dig into the bed if its shallow and cover yourself with the mud on all exposed part of the body and keep pouring over water or submerger upto yoour mouth under water and wait it out. You could also go in your car and head for a road where theres no trees or grass.

First check for smoke, direction of wind, animal movement, check if your area is mature forest or brush. Brush, move. Mature forest, sparse vegetation check for rock cliffs(this area). Know your location and location of streams, lakes etc., logging roads for firebreak. If you are lost, in deep dry brush with a strong wind blowing your way and woodland creatures running past, bend over put head between legs and kiss your a$$ goodbye.

In all actuallity, you would check wind direction very first, if the event is being moved by any decent amount of wind, you probably won't outrun it

Better off to asses the situation (should only take seconds) and head in the direction which seems the safest

Some times this may be a little dicey, but you have to play each scenerio by ear and make quick decisions for the topography your in, what the weather is doing, time of day, and fuel models

Wing and I once spent the better part of a day standing on a reef under an overturned canoe in the middle of a lake. There was so much smoke, we had to stay under the canoe. I don't know how much air there is under a canoe, but apparently it was enough.
