While smoking ribs, I put a file in the coals.

I usually put wood chips in the coals but they dont come out nearly as nice!!

Not to be critical but you might think about what was on that file that wound up on the ribs. I just don't want you to poison yourself. I like the shape, by the way.

joking aside, as long as he's not trying to heat treat galvanized steel, i wouldn't worry much.

Thanks, I think it did. The file warped and it allowed me to cut off the file tang with a hack saw.

I get a bed of coals going in my smoker. I threw in extra for the knife. When they have burned down I put on the meat and wood. If there was anything on the file, it was long gone by the time I put on the meat.

I don't know if this knife will keep it's present shape. When I straighten it with heat from the forge I may feel the need to hit it a few more times with the hammer.

I don't know about the temp, but keep in mind that the file tang is very soft, you can bend it pretty easily.

Lot of times the you can see the anneal color on a new file.
