Illegal to fish with goldfish?

My ex-brother-in-law (my sister's ex-husband), told me a long time ago that fishing with goldfish is against state law (Louisiana). I didn't know if anyone else had heard about this or if it's illegal in any other state.

The reason behind it is because goldfish totally kill off the largemouth bass population when they spawn (they eat the eggs). We don't have smallmouth bass here, so I don't know about those. I didn't have any plans to fish with goldfish, but I read something here that struck my memory on this subject.

Gold fish get big, in big water. They are not native to any waters in the USA. They eat whatever is avialable and they bread like rabbits. They kill off what ever fish were there before they got there!

Mish Wisc NY NJ NM AZ TX I could go on and on. all have laws against using them as bait. In NM if you release one into the system and get cought. Well sun light will have to be piped into you for aavery long time.

I remember when I got up there (from Hawaii) - a bunch of us were topside doing some salmon fishing. We'd catch em, call below, cooks would come up and get them and cook them up for dinner. Who knew that they had a Game Warden on the Submarine Base, Bangor, Washington? And who knew that it was illegal to fish for salmon with barbed lures? The look on our faces was probably priceless when after the game warden "explained" the rules said "Now reel in those lines boys - and if any of you hit a snag and have to cut your lines - $50 fine."

It's NOT dumb. These goldfish are introduced species that ruin alot of good fishing areas.
