Still fiddling with a few old rifles, took this french mas 36 out for a few rounds today. It was originally a 7.5 mas and then someone converted it to .308, probably century arms. They set back the barrel, modified the forearm a bit and added a safety ala SKS. The sights leave a lot to be desired at least for me, peep sight. Could be the ugliest rifle to be found but not to me. I also have one in 7.5 mas sans safety and a old beater I picked up for the action. One of these days I'll pick up some 7.5.... anyhoo here it is

MAS36 was a good rifle in its day, except for lack of a safety.

I always figured the French were expected to carry on an empty chamber and not shoot back until they had time to chamber a round.

Not that the feeling is unusual since that was the official way to carry a 1911 in the holster, with the safety only used when moving from one place of cover to another during a firefight. Today we think nothing of carrying a striker fired pistol chambered and ready with no real safety present.

It is in good shape, probably not used much. It's a 7.62 by51 mm

if memory serves and it probably don't , the mas 36 action has the fewest parts of any military bolt action.

I had always thought the 36 mas action was not all that strong. I was thumbing through Frank DeHaas's book Bolt action rifles. He has a chapter on french military bolt actions. He talks about how strong the mas 36 is, I had no idea.

lol, Most folks don't know it but I was born in Kentucky, lived there back and forth as a kid and young man. Now when I go down to visit they think I'm from Canada. I guess I drop the "eh" too much.
