short chambered barrels for a small ring mauser

I have a extra small ring mauser action and in light of the recent thread about a cz in 7.62 russian, a though occurred lol. There was a time short chambered barrels could be had for mauser actions, They were priced pretty good, less than a 150 bucks. I looked around for one in 7.62 russian and came up short. The usual places were out of stock. Any thoughts on other sources?

I was looking at Sheilan and they have apparently stopped making pre-threaded replacement barrels for the Mauser actions. I never expected that day to arrive!

Numrich website is very difficult to navigate but I did find some barrel stubs they had from cut down factory runs and most had shanks that would be big enough to turn down and thread for a small ring action. None would be chambered and I did not see any in .311 or .312.

You could snag an AK barrel. Most of them are going for less than $100. They have a huge unthreaded stub to fit the standard trunion. I am not sure of the diameter, but it might work. You would have to block the gas port hole, but if you had it in a lathe already for the threading it would be easy enough to turn a slight taper on the barrel and make it presentable. It would also already be chambered for the 7.62x39.

Of course you are still going to need to deal with the bolt face, extractor, and the magazine and feeding issues presented by the difference in case size. It might make a dandy single shot.


When I first read the thread title I was sure you were going to be looking for 2 1/2" 12 gauge shells for one of your heirloom shotguns!
