Simple repairs

My garden tractor started bogging down, running badly, barely pulling itself along, puffing black smoke.

I was anticipating loading it up on the trailer and taking it to the mechanic.

Laying awake thinking about the situation I had a brain f@&t and this morning I got up and started the tractor, then removed the air filter. It ran like new.

I had forgotten to change the filter on the last servicing so it was running on a two year old clogged beyond belief unit.

No more black smoke, power to pull up tree stumps and I am a happy lawn mower, and I did not have to load the thing up and haul it to town.

All it takes is forgetting one simple thing and your day can be ruined.

Amen. I don't care what it is. I've started putting everything on the calendar because I keep forgetting to remember stuff.

The girl at the parts desk got a kick out of the fact that I was buying parts for a tractor that was 10 years older than she was.

The little Wheel Horse is a 1973 model.

I have put a lot of time into that little machine this year with a replacement of the belly pan blade belt, oil change, and now an air filter. Every time I think it is about dead I throw another $10 part on it and use it another year.

You are supposed to change them?...Where is it located?...You would think it would have couple of years left in it..Wouldn't you?

Anyway....yeah, nice to get thru a whole job with out a pit stop for repairs.

Filters, air and fuel (tractor)..oil change...sharpen blades, grease fittings...clean radiator and weed shield.....

Weed whackers.... filter, fuel lines,..... trimmer line...... I don't count as it a consumable...
Chainsaws ...oilers and chain...fuel lines.....
...a keep the mud dabbers out of the exhaust....

I can not keep a fuel line on a small engine any more. They do not last a season.

It is as if they were putting acid in the gas.

It's the alcohol in the gasoline.

I thank Harbor Freight for providing cheap tools to outfit my "shop" at The Place"......
Basic stuff, but also all the cool specially stuff...filter wrenches, extended length screwdrivers, chain saw chain sharpeners, battery powered transfer pump....and of course the Boxes assortments of bolts/nuts/screws.....pins/clips and snow plow pins, hose clamps, springs.....
Saves a 1 hour round trip to the "city"
But all cheap enough, that way if it gets broken into.....they won't get the "good stuff"

I sure don't know what they are selling your states but I don't have the slightest problem in any of my gear. Everything runs like it's suppose to and the only fuel line I've ever replaced was dry rotted and must have been 10-12 years old. I do stabilize all my fuel but gas runs fine even at three years old. (If this post jinxes me I am going to be miffed)

The last repair was the Echo Weed whacker.....last week.
Has been a great machine and is the "easy start" motor on it...have used it for about 5 years....but don't keep any gas in it for any length of time.

Had used it in June...did leave gas in it.....wouldn't start last week....checked the fuel line...line and rubber plus that plugs into tank was melted on the bottom...pick up line was melted closed/off.

They have a kit for $13 bucks.....and the guy at the fix-it place has a Spring tune up for $29 bucks (includes speak plug and air filter)....so told him to go for it....as the carb may need cleaning any way.

Must have this happen a lot as the kit is all premade and is easy to change.

Beer doesn't count. Beer makes you smarter, braver and much better looking......and it doesn't effect your lines.......well, except the line that makes you pee. For some reason that one really gets a work out.

I have figured out that the average NON mechanical, no DIY person never changes the oil in their lawnmowers. A friend ask me to see if I could get their lawnmower started this spring since they couldn't get it started. Lawnmower was around 3 years old!
I checked the fuel and gas was in it. Then I checked the oil and it was barely on the dipstick and was black and thick as syrup. I had to take it home to fix it, needed a plug and carb was gunked up.
I changed the oil, sharpened the blade, and installed a new air filter. When I took back home I ask my friend, hey, when was the last time you changed the oil in this mower. I then got blank stare, and a wellllllll..............never have!
Lawn mowers breath dust laden air and the oil should be changed at least twice per season. I can't believe that this poor little mower even ran after I worked on it! I guess the average Joe just runs them till they blow and then buys a new mower instead of giving it a few 10 minute oil changes and making it last for years.
This is not the first time I have run into this, and it never ceases to amaze me!!!
