He had many pages about .177 pellet guns, xbows, etc, but not a single word about silencers. :-) He was very much in favor of being able to quietly take game (never mentioned gill nets or snares or traps, either) but not a single WORD about the most effective means of having little noise! Pellet guns and xbows are single shots. A silenced .22 offers 7 shots per second.

When Mel Tappan was alive and writing things were considerably different from today.

For one thing the $200 tax stamp represented a weeks pay and not a day's pay, and most people could not afford the toy.

It was also the beginning to the formation of the ATFE and they were like a bunch of newly radicalized Muslims, not issuing permits on request like they do today.

Then there was the problem that background checks were not a simple click of the computer button. You did not just fill out your form and wait a few. They required phone work, foot work and contacts with local LEO and sometimes interviews with neighbors.

Then there was the other thing about SHTF press of the 1970s. They were practical. They figured that if there was no rule of law, or enforcement of law, and a person needed a silenced .22, he would make one.

BTW, Mel Tappan was among those of us that would not have made it through a mass extinction or bug out event. He was paralyzed from the shoulders down and confined to a wheel chair by a cervical spine injury.

He made a good living writing about the coming "end of the world" as did many of the advocates of the 1970s era, and the 1980s, and '90s and the Y2K group, and the Mayan Calendar time suspension crowd. And some of the books being sold today are reprints of the work of people who said we would be gone by now.

And they are still raking in money from the believers of their alternate religion.

I still remember seeing a picture of Mel Tappan in the old American Survivor magazine, shooting a .475 JDJ TC Contender. It rocked his wheelchair into a wheelie and the muzzle blast blew his hair back like he was riding in a convertible!

His work was good advice for the time, and much of it is still good advice today, although there have been some advances he never contemplated, especially in handgun developments.
