Although being protected (?) I am not suggesting the firing of that shot....Noooo...wouldn't do that.

Pigeons were used in WWII to guide bombs, actually I think it didnt make it past the testing stages. IIRC they were also used to carry mssgs during both WW's and some other cool stuff.

The US planned on dropping a bunch of bats over Japan, with some sort of fire starter attached to them. The plan was that the bats would go to the nearest building, all made of wood in those days, and the bombs would ignite, burning down the buildings.

Bottom line, they are very low tech way to get a mssg from one person to another during war time and possible be trained for other projects. Funny at first but if ISIS is going to try it in our Country they dont have to worry about hurting their buddies because the entire USA is their enemy.

You ever see a war memorial devoted to animals? There's one I saw in Nova Scotia...I forget where. Had a few dogs listed, a few horses, but the overwhelming majority of animals named were pigeons.

Pigeons have been used for centuries in various "schemes" of spying, intelligence, and information gathering. I Have not heard of countries ever booking them in jail or memorializing them before. That seems to be a bit overboard......, but interesting!

Not that any of these countries, or ourselves, or many more besides would hesitate to use animals in espionage, but obvious research animal tagging/marking is pretty obvious.

I don't know about booking them in jail, but don't underestimate the contributions animals have made, and continue to make, during wartime. Messenger pigeons were used extensively during WW1 and WW2, and a lot of lives were saved because of the messages they carried. There were a number of pigeons decorated for valour. And then when you factor in dogs and, particularly in the case of ww1 and earlier, horses, and think of how their participation changed things....and remember that an animal can't comprehend why people are going to war, they don't feel a patriotic surge, or say "dolce et decorum est". A messenger pigeon, or a dog that's likewise carrying messages, or searching for bombs, or wounded, or even just helping to boost morale at the front, is doing it because they have been trained, and they know it's their job. And it's in their nature to do that job....I think that's worth a little memorial.
