Default the saywer mini filter]a review

tonite i finally opend my filter package and tried it out
i used water stright from the tap.
and the water smelled and tasted as though it was not filterd at all.
so much for the the sawyer mini. if it will act like that with just well water
how well would it do in a camping/suvival enviroment, just saying.
i rate it a two thumbs down.

Well, first the purpose of the filter is to give you water as safe as what comes out of your tap.

So if you run tap water through it what you get is very clean tap water.

Run down to the pond where the cows stand knee deep and fetch back a pint, run it through and drink it and get back to us in about 48 hours.

Before writing off the Sawyer units remember that they are NATO approved for use world wide.

What were you expecting? If you just want improved taste, get a Britta. It's my opinion you need more experience and education on filters before you start rating them. The Sawyer is very effective.

what was i expecting a lot better filter than that. if you can still taste the bad water than what ever is in the water that makes
it taste bad is still there. that,s all i,m saying. at least my berky sport will do what i need. i just bought the mini cause i wanted something a
    little smaller.

A charcoal filter will improve taste. A biological filter for making water safe to drink removes bacteria and possibly viruses. If you want both, get a carbon stage to add to it. A .2 micron filter will not remove dissolved chemicals or minerals. It will make most water safe to drink.

You can make your own charcoal pre-filters in the field, if you have any spare container you're willing to put a hole in or bamboo etc. I put a layer of sand on top, to get the larger sediment out. These are also a good way to filter sediment for the SODIS method.

I have a Culligan carbon filter on my tap and it removes the chlorine taste just fine from the city water I drink. My Sawyer mini does not, but it isn't a carbon filter.

Hayshaker, the Sawyer mini filter is a hollow fiber filter. It's not designed to improve taste or smell. It's designed to remove contaminants. The only taste or smell improvements will be those that are directly caused by those contaminants, i.e. organic matter. If you don't have that problem with your well then you won't notice an improvement. You are expecting it to perform a function it was not designed to do. As others have said, you'll need a carbon filter to alter the smell/taste. If you choose to make or purchase a carbon pre-filter then you may find the water tastes flat. If so, just shake it to re-oxygenate it and it should taste fine.

Yeah, gift it to me - I would trust mine over most filters ! Its not a taste and odor filter, its for removing nasties from your water and it won't remove minerals like iron and such so no improvement in taste would be noted. If you want clean tasting water in the field, pack in some bottled water but don't forget to pack out the empty bottles !

Ill bet it still beats squeezing pee out of elephant poop!

Lamewolf, if you save the water bottles they screw right onto the Sawyer mini so having an empty water bottle is really handy with that unit.

It will also screw onto a 2 liter bottle.

How many survivalists does it take to change the bottle on a Sawyer filter?

    Eight.

    One to change the bottle.
One to ensure no one saw where the bottle stash was.
One to make certain there are no government bottle conspiracies listed on the internet.
    Five to guard the perimeter.

Now that right there is funny I don't care who you are.

The 5 guys to say plastic bottles aren't safe, 1guy to suggest drinking pee, 1 to flame him for that, 1 to suggest making a filter from sand and a bandana, 1 to say you don't need to filter because he never has and he is alive, 1 to say boiling is the best way, 1 to promote distilling, 1 to say distilled water will kill you...
