I agree to a point, don't see it as wilderness survival, see it more as wilderness living.
so the definition of a criminal is someone who breaks the law and you want me to believe that somehow more laws make less criminals?

I just see it as primitive living, simply because there was availability of goods and services, even though it may have been far a few between.
No different that any other part of the frontier, be it hills, plains, mountains, swamps, rivers or forests.
Just happen to be the area they lived in.

Still living in the area, knowing some of the folk in question and being one of them myself, I will just sit here and chuckle while you folks run on.

About half what HS said was accurate, the rest was the mythology of popular culture.

BBQ comes from the Caribbean. The Taino indians had a method for cooking meat in the ground. They called that method of cooking barbacoa. It is from that word that we get the word barbeque.

But, don't tell that to no Texans. It'll break their little hearts to find out they didn't invent it.

Also, I think that china boxes are now preferred over the pig in the ground in the Caribbean. With adobo mojado in la caja china.

Yea, I know those guys well, but they were not Hillbillies.

Almost all the well known distillers, Beam, Elijahh Graig, and my personal favorite Evan Williams, were from the bluegrass region. A big part of the Jim Beam works is across the river in Ohio Even Jack Daniels and George Dickle are distilled in the rolling hills of middle TN and not anywhere near a mountain filled with hillbillies.

And would you believe that the Boone family was actually Welsh, and a large portion of the miners working the coal fields of Appalachia were imported from Cornwall, Italy, and Croatia.

And while some were boiling poultices, fanning smoke and chanting away the evil spirits others were establishing places like the NC research triangle, Transylvania University, University of TN, University of KY and the University of WVA. Even Daniel Boone's home town has a good sized university tucked away in the Yadkin Valley.

And Ellie Mae was from ARKANSAS !!!! That's as far west of the Appalachian Mountains as Chicago is.

Next thing you know one of you guys is going to be trying to convince everyone that Discovery Channel finally found a Big Foot named George, and MUFON has discovered evidence in Hanger 1 that Obama is one of the invading alien overlords.

Nope that is absolutely incorrect Hunter. The Pyramids were the first successful microwave oven.

the reason they are still digging around in Egypt is that they are trying to find the instruction manual.

Although no one, including herself, knows where her people were from originally, or how many generations it took to get here, some say her origins were in PA, but she refined her character in Kalifornia.

Are we getting too political here?

I have only been to the Bahamas. But, the islands come over here all the time. We have a huge melting pot in my circle. Family and friends from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Trinidad, St Lucia. I get dishes and sauces all the time.

Never had the first one. I have had many different soups/stews from the Caribbean and Latin America. So, while I have never heard it called sancocho or at least don't recall the name. I have more than likely had it.
