Beliefs and science are two different things. You can stand next to me and insist an orange is an apple, and completely believe it. It won't change the fact it is an orange.

But I do agree with you as far as not FORCING people to get vaccinated. Freedom, choice, yada yada...

Excellent points Rick, the US Government is far from perfect but they and others have been highly successful at virus eradication, some say too successful this is why there is such low compliance today.

Measles is spread airborne by tiny droplets than can infect people after the sick person has left the room so a higher immunization rate of about 90% for the "herd effect" to work is recommended in the USA. Personally if I knew that my doctor's office was seeing measles patients I would NOT go there even though I have been vaccinated. Like most people I would protest very loudly.

BTW measles was effectively eradicated in the USA, but then brought back from the Philippines, Polio could also be brought back to the USA from Pakistan and other places where it still exists today. You are free to not VAX if you don't wish to, but know the risks, the elderly and very young are at the highest risk as are those with other health issues.

@wilderness medic listened to Yvette Guinevere interview. Actually better science content than I expected. She explains "herd effect" fairly well. It is NOT necessary to risk the health of those who have health issues with vaccines and especially MMR. Also only 95% or whatever the protection rate of the vaccine provides is not an issue as long as approximately 90% of the general population IS vaccinated. This so called "Science Babe" explains it quite well, I was prepared to be offended by her but was not. A great podcast! Thanks for posting.

I don't want to get political but I am not a registered Libertarian like her and but I disagree with her and do not believe that vaccines should be forced on people. They are in Mississippi.

YES Smallpox has been eradicated (except in vial in labs) allegedly under tight controls. Surprised she did not know this. Effectively eradicated in 1977 and then declared eradicated in 1980 following a global immunization campaign led by the World Health Organization.

Hey, that's pretty much exactly where I was. I've followed her on Facebook for a while and liked her articles. At first listening to her in person I expected to be disappointed but was very impressed by the end. I as well don't believe it should be forced, but thoroughly enjoyed her quotes and rationale for why she believes it, even if I don't agree.

Her name is basically a mockery of "Food Babe" a somewhat attractive female that pushes woo and garbage on people, whereas "Science Babe" can and does back up her beliefs.

I'm not trying to bash anyone for their beliefs. We all have to do what we think is best for ourselves and our families. I don't fault you if you are one of those that doesn't believe in vaccinations. I wish you didn't believe that way but it's a free country.

I will be 61 on Friday and those of us in that age range and older can easily remember TB sanatoriums and home quarantines. There were just so many diseases that took their toll on the general public. Vaccinations ended that for a lot of communicable diseases.

I really don't wish to debate the pros and cons only make certain folks were aware that there was a significant measles outbreak.

WHen I came down with the mumps, no one was quarantined except for myself, not in the hospital, but sent back home where I had 6 other siblings, my parents and my mothers parents lived with us. We never heard of anyone having mumps, not sure where I came into contact with it, but I had been vaccinated as had my siblings. It was just over a week that I had been in class with other students.
