Your are correct. All the leaders should be well trained with the weapons and all the gear. Tripwire system for example should be fully tested and setup for practice before they headed out. Once a lady who rarely goes camping got upset when a more experienced friend of ours told her to practice setting up her tent. Dang lady if you can't do it in fair weather how can you do it in a driving thunderstorm when hypothermia is about to set in. Same with tripwire system and firearm, are all the parts there and can you use it effectively under stress? Bottom line there are some folks who should never venture beyond a state park campsite with electricity and water faucets. IMO. Not so humble, I'm a grumpy old man.

Agreed. I excel at figuring things out in a crisis, but a polar bear attack is a bit more pressure than I want in that respect.

I don't want to insult this guy; it seems that he did most of the right things and put his life on the line to do his duty to the group for which he was responsible, but would only like to reiterate the observation that lack of preparation has a way of hurting you when you don't expect it to become an issue. If you carry gear for a reason, know how to operating it for the same reason.

Always carry a head lamp....with GOOD batteries, so as to read the directions, at midnight on what ever you need to use to not die.

In a suburb in North Texas there have been a lot of Home Invasions by Humans (not Polar Bears). Mostly the criminals targeted the homes of immigrants that unlike most Texans did not have firearms. Here is the story of one teenage boy who used his mobile phone to call 911 and the police caught the criminal.

That is probably the best outcome. However some people choose to purchase firearms and even more importantly LEARN TO USE THEM EFFECTIVELY!!!

I will NOT post the website of this particular instruction company because that is spam but there are many methods to get training on how to use lethal or non-lethal force, but running out a backdoor and calling 911 on a mobile phone or barricading yourself in the attic or bathroom etc is also a possibility. I strongly recommending taking a class provided for free by your local law enforcement.

When going camping in the wilderness take a free or low cost class from a game warden or park ranger.
