Here is one of the best things in my new shop. The guy here before me made this heater and I can appreciate it's design. Expecially when it's 10 outside and I'm nice and tasty while I work.... it has a baffle system in the chimney and top of stove which is blown by an attached squirl cage and fan. It also has a valve on the front to actually blow air into the fire or coal bed which generates an extremely hot fire if you can keep it feed.

So I got enough parts in to start my grinder project. I was considering a full from scratch build but really it would of cost me more in the long run. I decided to start with the polar bear forge grinder in a box, picked up some wheels and some aluminum arms from a couple different ebay auctions a bag of hardware from tractor supply.

OK after several hours of drilling and tapping and assemble I am making some good progress.
I actually didn't even remember I had this motor until I was looking through the junk pile for something else, its just 3/4 HP 220v single phase. I wanted a 3 phase 1 HP with VFD and probably/Maybe will but I'm going to see how this one works since I have it and the other will cost about 700- 800 if I cant scavenge something. The wiring is just temporary so I could see how it ran, I will at least add an on/off switch and a box to put it in, unless I change out the whole motor. I wish I would of though ahead and picked up some 2 x 72 belts, this grinder will fit up to 90" belts. I'm dying to see how it tracks. I need to pick up a nice spring and make the tooling shelf etc.

Tooling shelf and platen is partially made, when I get a 2 x 72 belt so I can get a visual of exactly what I want, I will cut down the platen to a smaller size and add a 2 x 8 x 1/4" piece of hardened A2 tool steel to the front of it. The tooling shelf and platen back came from the scrap pile I had some heavy duty shelves I scavenged from somewhere so I just cut it from one of them. I do not use or need much of a tooling shelf all my grinding is done free hand so it's in the way most of the time anyway, I use it to shape handle scales more than anything.

Jacuzzi has always made great grinders.I second Batch's comment. It is a great project.
You know I really do not enjoy leather work, I think if I did I might kick it up a notch. I do however make a sturdy sheath, all are made from 8-9 oz veggie tanned premium leather. If there is any tooling I do that also for what its worth, I do my own stitching to...worst part. I think leather work might be a art of its own you know.

So yesterday evening after work I ran to Jantz picked up a couple 2 x 72 belts, ate dinner and went out to the shop to work on my grinder. I cut the platen down to size and mounted the 8" x 2" x 1/4" piece of A1 tool steel, I managed to get it on nice and straight, thank goodness. I might add a piece of 1/4" mild steel behind the A1 to give me a full 1/2" clearance for using the corners of the platen. I will probably go with a new motor not because I do not like this one, but because it could use a couple more inches of shaft. Its only 3/4 horse but I could not bog it down much or stop it from the type of grinding I would do on a daily basis. I uploaded a couple videos to photo bucket, of it running if you want to watch. I was kind of amazed of how little tweaking I had to do it runs very true and tracks just like it should. Here is a link to a vid of it running the left to right tracking is at end of vid.

Well, your leather work has always impressed me.
That's a pretty slick job on the belt sander. A couple of questions. 1. On the front of the idler arm there is a bolt. What is it for? 2. What are you adjusting to change the tracking. Curious minds want to know. Nice job.
The bolt on the front of of the Idler Arm is just a temporary handle to remove/install the belts..to take the tension off the belt you may say.
I adjust the tracking left to right with a small 1/4" x 20 bolt threaded into the idler wheel tracking adjustment mechanism.

in this pic you can see the small 1/4" x 20 tracking adjustment screw just under the idler wheel on the back side of the tracking mech. This bolt simply changes the angle of the idler wheel and causes the belt to track left or right as desired. I ordered these wheels from Ebay because I do not have my own lathe (on wish list), anyway the tracking wheel on this one is crested which helps a lot, all wheels have sealed bearings pressed into both sides. I will weld something to the bolt head to help with tracking adjustment when I get the welding supplies out for now its a 7/16" wrench.

Super! Thanks. I saw your hand sneak in there at the end of the video but it wasn't there long enough for me to figure out where your adjustment was. Thanks for the explanations. Again, super job.
R7 - here's what I did on mine. I used a threaded knob for the tracking adjustment and put a wooden handle on it for my tension release bar.

I plan on embellishing this one also, but right now I'm on hold on any other improvements until I made and sell a more knives...lol.
Next up will be a large wheel, and small wheel attachment, then maybe a 3phase 1.5hp variable speed motor not sure about that one yet.

I'm on phase two of the grinder project and the main reason I built it, as my old grinder will flat grind as good as the next. My old grinder will not do this and I cant wait to use it this weekend. I have got all the parts in to put together my small wheel attachment I have wanted one of these for years.
