This wouild also be a viable space weapon, where there is no atmosphere to attenuate the laser beam. Several countries have been claiming that the U.S. has been attacking their satelites. Perhaps this is already being used in near earth orbit. And this is only a 30 KW laser. I imagine a 150 KW laser in space could take down a pretty big object.

Cost per use is impressive. I want a small one of those in my deer stand/blind near the high voltage lines out on the remote side of the ranch. Hopefully the utility company will not notice my non contact inductive power tap. Oops I really should not post this publicly. LOL

I actually know a guy that did that. The power company nailed him about two weeks after he hooked it up. That voltage drop didn't take long for them to track down. He came very close to doing some time over it. Got off with probation.

Grizz - I chuckled when I watched that because I was thinking the same thing. Just how bad do you have to tick the captain off to get that assignment?

I saw this story on the TV news, but I never thought of it as a survival tool until Rick posted it. Good thinking!
I was joking about stealing power in the USA. The utility companies monitor these lines very precisely, even if a bubba buried his no contact device and only extracted a few seconds of power every few days his location would be detected. In countries like India up to 50% of power is/was stolen.

Plant your forbs food plot below your hunting blind and provide reliable source of power from a small hydroelectric or biomass generator with sufficient power storage and/or transmission lines to your small LaWS device. This could "theoretically" be an viable silent weapon. This might be a great way to harvest a large number of feral hogs without spooking the herd (avoid loud firearms or close range of bow/arrow). Now, just to process all that backstrap and sausage and fill the deep freeze. OH and also the cost of 5kW LaWS… Get A&M to pay for it as a feral hog eradication system, with microprocessors, optical sensors, stepper motors etc to auto detect and target hogs… LOL Makes as much sense as boll weevil, giant salvinia and fire ant programs. I'm only joking. I'll write up a grant proposal just to get the funny rejection letter from DOD and Universities. LOL

A South Korean colleague told me that while on patrol in the DMZ they used the maps of land mines to harvest deer that had been killed by mines to prevent the north from clandestine incursions. These supplemented their diet.
So I got the idea that a great PSYOP tool (similar to one being used in Persian Gulf against Persian drones and possible nuclear missiles) would be small automatic anti-personnel LaWS at the DMZ. While there is a large group of N.K. watching drive a herd of pigs, cattle or goats etc into the DMZ and have the LaWS take them out. Then use high altitude balloons to drop DVDs of this footage over their barracks. They would be thinking and word of mouth passing on “Those Yankees are deploying space age technology against us, and feasting on deer and other livestock while we are not allowed to shoot live rounds of expensive ammo and must club rats with our gun stocks and just eat them.” PSYOP rules! Well, I may be a bit biased and idealistic, but the truth is stranger than fiction.
President Reagan's threat of "Star Wars" weapons was mostly psychological.

The Navy will probably have a tough time sailing those frigates to Indy. Anyway, they haven't lobbed many shells at me so I'm not too fearful of the laser thingy. I was kidding myself a couple of days ago. I invited myself to play laser tag.
