Thread: Can coffee grounds, for compost, be stored?

  1. #1

Default Can coffee grounds, for compost, be stored?

    1) Is there any way a compost pile, started this time of year (michigan) will begin to decompose?
    2) Will a compost pile cook in the winter?
    3) Can I get a bunch of coffee grounds and store them for use next spring? I read somewhere that they lose their nitrogen after a while if not used.

How would you store them? Coffee grounds are really prone to fungus.

You could certainly start a compost pile but it won't do much unless you have quite a bit of material. The microbes that break down the organic matter are a living community that thrives in a moist, warm climate. Unless you have enough material to help maintain warmth in the middle the microbes won't begin work until next spring. But you'll be that much ahead when they do. I cleaned out my compost bin yesterday, added it to the garden and tilled everything in. I'm ready to start the bin again.

I was thnking I would start filling a plastic barrel and just leave it outside to freeze and in the spring it would be ready to be mixed in.

I’ve seen piles that go all winter but they have way more mass than what you would want to turn by hand. All my winter stuff goes into a ¼ in. mesh bin until spring and gets used for a new pile. I go by the smell ....... if it stinks it’s loosing it’s good. That isn’t even bad, it will be humus someday.

Don't do this.....it will become a big, heavy, stinky glob, of moldy nasty stuff.

No, I didn't do this....but had a couple od house plants in my work office that I watered with cold coffee....plants grew very well, but started to stink after a while.....had to take them out and soak them in clean water, in a bucket, then drain a couple of times to get the sour stink out.

If you won't want to add to the compost over the winter.....would be a possibility of "overload" of one component of the pile,... just spread on the garden it's self........or start a "lasagna" patch....spread out components in layers....as sort of a pre-compost pile.

The secret of compost in "mix" of greens and browns, moisture to allow the microbes to work.......Nitrogen helps to freed the process.
Old trick was to toss and mix in in a couple of handfuls of high nitrogen fertilizer (well, not with your bare hand)...to get the pile going....or getting hot.

You need at least a pile 3'X3' of perfect mix and moisture.... to "cook",....get weed seed killer hot, in warm weather....more in freezing temps.

I have had hot piles stop in cold weather, then restart in the spring......will be good compost, just take longer.

Anything is left long enough will rot and become composted soil

Just throw them out over your garden spot. They can do their work in the spring.
