    Default 10 guage

I have a line on a sxs 10 guage, not sure what it is yet. I haven't seen it but hopefully will soon. The gent want to trade so I probably have something to spare.

    any benefit with a 10 over a 12 ?

Usually with a 10 gauge you get more of everything.

    More shot per charge
    More weight in the gun
    More recoil for the shoulder

10 gauge is a hold over from the Brown Bess musket and has always been the go to gun for anytime a 12 was falling a little short.

Back in the day the 10 gauge with a full choke allowed you to reach out to 60 yards with 2 ounces of shot, and pretty much still does.

In this day of short barreled riot guns and 20 yards viewed as "average shotgun range" by the masses we often forget the capabilities of a shotgun.

The only 10 gauges I have experience with were single shots and I must admit the experience was "brutal". I would expect the same from a double.

BTW, Doc Holiday carried a 10 gauge double at the OK Corral.

    In my H&R/NEF cabinet sits a H&R Long Tom 10 ga, ...36" barrel....full choke.
Rescued it for a guy that absolutely hated it...carried it for years as a long range Goose gun.

Now here is where it kinda come apart.....Specific use was for long range geese, hence the long barrel and full choke...BUT was designed, built and produced pre-steel shot.....
Steel shot not suppose to be fired thru a full choke as it doesn't "compress" like lead....BUT only steel shoot is allowed for waterfowl.....???

So, turkey gun?....12 ga duplex 4X6 3" loads rolls them just fine...and only hurts a little bit...(honestly haven't fire a shot gun after surgery....yet)

Interesting as there is/(was now, auction just ended) a 24" barrel w/screw in choke on eBay went for $106 bucks....

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/N-E-F-H-amp-...3#ht_35wt_1041

Got in at $30 bucks.....but didn't really want it.

Now if is was me....and depending on the choke.....and the fact I don't happen to have a SXS 10 ga....I might be tempted.

thanks for the info fellas. I don't really need a 10 ga double but if it has steel barrels and a reputable brand I will probably make a trade for funsies.

The Tennessee State Museum has one of the only 2 or 3 authenticated Daniel Boone guns known. It is a 10 gauge flintlock fowler.

He was also reported to have carried a 10 gauge flintlock smoothbore at the Battle of Blue Licks, where his son and 1/3 of the male population of Kentucky was killed.

There were more smoothbores than rifles on the frontier, and many of them were 10 gauge.

There was probably a reason for that.

More than likely the prospect of a 700 caliber round ball smacking the intended target, or 20-30 #000 buckshot.

I'm glad to see your comment about the barrels. I can't remember all the info, but a friend of mine wanted a 10ga sxs and couldn't find a "modern" one. I was just going to ask you to be cautious, but I see that you know the deal. LOL

These days, I think you can get as much powder and shot out of a 3.5 in. 12ga magnum.....but that's no where near as cool as a 10ga sxs. Hahaha.

Back in the late 60's, early 70's there was a gun shop in Guam (retired military guy) that would build just about anything you wanted and ship it. A guy I met was having a 10 guage, semi-auto built with a 15 round magazine. When I asked what the heck he was going to do with it, and how the heck he was going to shoot it --- his reply....

Duck hunting - anchor the stock in the dirt, shoot, go collect dinner for the rest of the week.

We had a farm that we would shoot at the gravel pit behind the barn....sadly the Hobby Ranchers bought up the land around and "complained" about the shooting.

Guy was shooting an Ithaca 10 ga Mag auto loader....with slugs........
Why?,..... don't know of any water buffalo around.......but was impressive.

    I can't even imagine shooting 15 rounds.......Holy Ship.....

Oohh Okay..whenever I go kayak fishing ..I would secure my fishing rods with a paracord...and in fact all my stuffs on the kayaks are secured. I also secure my 45 with a lanyard...so that in case I fell or tripped, It would not slip out..even though my kydex holster has a very firm grip.

Just sharing and hope that no more losses in the future when your canoes roll over.

    shades of a past era.

Punt guns were fired into flocks of rafting birds, often killing hundreds at a time.

Here I sit all broken hearted, the 10 gauge turned out to be a 12 gauge. So I passed on the deal.

    Well that was a letdown!

We had you ready to grab the 10gauge and shoot ducks at 100 yards, fight the British and explore new worlds.

Was the gun in good shape otherwise?

It is always amazing to me when I encounter people that do not know what they have or think it is something different that it is.

It does not take a genius, or a lot of expensive equipment, to drop a 12 gauge shell in a gun to see if it fits!

Or perhaps even read the markings on the side of the barrel.

It was a davis/werner hammerless in ok shape but it didn't function quite right. Needs a top lever spring. The funny thing, there wasn't a marking one on the barrels, looked like original finish too. yup here I was ready to take on the world, all my dreams dashed, LOL.
