Pre-cooked, Dehydrated Beans: Reconstituted

Here's a cool experiment I've done, that turned out really well: During the colder parts of this last spring, I had made a pot of unseasoned pinto beans. I drained, rinsed and dehydrated them. They've lasted all summer, without vacuumed sealing. Yesterday we were having burritos and I had no refried beans so, I thought to use them at the last minute. I simmered them at a 1:1 ratio, stirring and mashing a bit as they cooked. I added about 3 tbsp. bacon grease and just cooked it slowly until it looked like warmed refried beans, which took all of about 20 minutes. They were really good and 3 cups of the dried cooked beans with the 3 cups water ended up the equivalent of about 2 15-oz. cans. I am definitely drying my cooked leftover beans from now on!

I rinsed the beans before dehydrating and I put them in a 1/2 gallon mason jar on top of the dehydrator (forgetting about them completely). I'm going to try this with my bean soup too but the broth may pose a problem :/

Anyway, have you guys done things like this too? I'm kind of an experimenter with my dehydrator because its from the 80's (Montgomery Wards).

I have a terrible memory and often forget to put beans on to soak but usually realise this just as I'm about to start cooking so I dehydrate cooked beans a lot. I don't do anything fancy, just cook the beans as per instructions then dehydrate til cripsy and store in a jar with an oxygen absorber. Once dehydrated all you need to do is soak in hot water for about 20mins then use in your recipe or cook for 15 mins or so if you want them for something else.

Your soup should be okay. I've dehydrated spaghetti sauce quite a bit. It turns out like fruit leathers. I don't know how your dehydrator is set up. If you don't have trays for fruit leather just use press and seal and crimp the edges up so the soup doesn't run off the sides. Spray the plastic with something like Pam to help reduce sticking and dehydrate.

I dehydrated cooked chili and, separately, cooked wheat berries. Turned out great @ 135 degrees till dried. Do the chili on wax paper.
