I love it when people bring up "stopping power", as being a "problem" with a 9 mm.
First of all, a handgun is a secondary weapon that is rarely used in combat. It's a last resort, being close to your enemy.
Second, if you are ever in a situation where you have to put a round in the chest of an attacker, or have actually seen it done in real life, I seriously doubt that you will ever again question the "stopping power" of a 9 mm.

I spent some time as a range instructor while in the Marines, using both the M1911 and the Berretta. Shooting accurately with a pistol requires practice, especially with the larger calibers. The time allowed in the service for pistol practice is very little, much of the time only once or twice a year. For many new and less experienced shooters the .45 was a difficult caliber to shoot. Putting rounds on target consistently took a lot of practice. Only senior officers and Staff NCO's did well, mostly due to their experience with the .45. When the 9mm was introduced the shooters became comfortable with the weapon much quicker. So much so that the Marines changed their pistol course to make it much more difficult to qualify.

I must agree with the idea that the pistol is not a primary weapon but a weapon of self defense, used in close combat. Rounds on target is the most important thing and by far the 9mm makes that much easier for more people than the .45. Stopping power? All I can say about that is, the few that I witnessed shot middle mass with the Beretta were killed. In combat, the pistol is only a good idea if your enemies bring only knives to the fight!
