    How about.
    bullet proof vest
5 or 6 Deadbolts for the door
    aluminum foil
bus pass (If you dont have a car)
Piece of plywood with about a 100 deck screws threw it to place under the window.
    1. If it's in your kit and you don't know how to use it....It's useless.
    2. If you can't reach your kit when you need it....Its useless.

    Tupperware (for storing leftovers)
    Heavy duty aluminum foil
    Paper towel HOLDER
    Fire extinguisher (A,B,C)
Cannister set (at least something to hold flour and sugar)
    Assorted batteries

Do yourself a favor and order these. They are for scraping baked on food off of pots and pans but I use them for scraping just about everything. They make baking spill overs or cookie sheet cleanup a snap. Use one in the kitchen, one in the tool box, and one in your backpack!

Your apartment is probably required by law to have the appropriate number of smoke detectors in place. But I'd put in fresh batteries.

If you are going to have cable. You can run the cable TV directly into your computer by using ATI's connector/converter.

I'm running it on my Dell XPS and it works just fine. Would save you the cost of a TV, which is what you are looking for. I think the latest version is the 650, which is about $100. I didn't buy the remote control. Hey! I'm a wilderness guy. I can reach for the mouse thank you.

Curtains/rods are not as necessary as blinds. Make sure your aparment has them. If not, buy those first. When my brother played minor league ball and found out that they don't get paid like the big leagues, he had to live with 3 other teammates. Due to the fact that they went to bed late (game over, out to eat at 11:30 or so, bed by 2), they slept late. Instead of curtains or blinds, they used aluminum foil and just lived like they were in London during the blackouts of WWII.

How about a house plant? Maybe plant some herbs? It'll be fun, you'll have a good time, but don't forget to read Hopeak's post.

I'm not too worried about living downtown, at least the downtown where Compuware is, because Cass Corridor is about 20+ blocks away and the ghetto is even further. My biggest problem is making sure I have the essentials by the time I get down there because my ol' jeep won't survive... thus if I find out I need, say, a dresser I have to taxi it out to some furniture place 25 miles away. Just piece of mind to know you have everything y'know

Just some things you may want to consider:

    kitchen:

    scouring pads
    scouring powder
    bleach
    frying pan
    crock pot
    blender
    knives
    broom
    dustpan
    mop/swiffer

Along with what Alpine mentioned above, you'll need other cleaning supplies for the bathroom.

    toilet cleaner
    toilet brush
    sink cleaner

by the way, you had a (?) next to bath mat. I say you should have one.

Mitch - personal and lifestyle difference will cause different people to have different things on hand. Just keep in mind that everytime you move to a new place you will $20 yourself to death at the store with little trips until you get things the way you want them. Keep that in mind and you'll do fine.

Definately a YES on the bathmat. I broke a da**ed toe because I slipped in the shower. I've had a bathmat ever since. A bit like closing the barn door after the horse walked out but I've got nine more horses to protect.

A good shrink! Because no one moves into, near, around Detroit unless it is court ordered. I was born there and got out as soon as I could and never looked back!
