a little snip from the page , well sure the plastic ammo can is undetectable, but isn't the ammo inside detectable? !New plastic ammo cans are untraceable to metal detectors.

I Wonder Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, "I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here, and drink what ever comes out?"
I think the blogger is talking about putting bug-out caches in those, not ammo. Still, if the bug-out gear has metal on it: buckles, snaps, etc. it'll still register.

Pffft. Not if you're using plastic ammo. Do I gotta 'splain everything?

Actually, I think I have another view on what these guys were trying to say. IF youre using an all plastic ammo can, for instance, and you bury it you dont have to worry about some raider/thief with a metal detector trying to find it. Granted, thats a huge stretch because #1 said thief would have to know the appx. area you buried your stash, and #2 he would have to be toteing around a metal detector. So, while its a neat concept, I think its another money pit trying to cash in on people who are survival minded. The problem with these marketing deals is that if a person starts to buy into the idea that this kind of stuff is "necessary" they are gonna end up with alot of junk they dont need, and it will make it harder for them to decide what to take or leave behind.
Imagine some guy runing around his house cause SHTF and he keeps going "Oh what about my ammo cans full of supplies? What about that special box with "everything I'll ever need to survive" what about etc etc." I can see this happening. This is why we need forums like this, so people know is necessary to buy/stock up on and what's marketed dead weight that looks appealing but isnt worth anything.
Now, on the OTHER hand, I could actually see a use for these things in a different situation. If you go camping in very damp climates ANY kind of sealed container is useful, and I guess is this is what suits you for that purpose then hey these things arnt that bad. But, to me, these ammo cans and boxes would be hard to carry. They would need to be planted at your escape point or randevue point ahead of time, and even then there are big chances your escape point could be blocked or compromised in some way. So I dunno, nifty at-home storage that is waterproof is all this is to me.
Couple of thoughts.......OK maybe a few more.....
Don't know about how invisible a plastic ammo can would be if the contents had metal in them.....but I'm gonna guess that the "foot print"(?) would be smaller.
#2 Metal ammo cans have gone OFF THE MAP on price last .50 cal can I saw was like $20 bucks.
#3 The SHTF-er, Prepper, Zombie Hunter, Survivalist, lumped together (Now don't get huffy)...Tend to be in a "Shinny nickel mind set"
"Lookie He got him a shinny nickel, and I need one too....or 10 or I won't survive......"So I gonna get one before it's too late....."
Prices go off the map, and ads like CTD, show up.......
Now the good news.....Harbor Freight to the rescue....plastic ammo boxes for $5....and we all know how well their $7 knives, $3 machete, and $2 fire still are.....!

I use a metal ammo can to carry my reference books in the UTV and truck.
I use them for all sorts of things, including ammo...tool boxes...electronics....and had a good source, or .30, .50, and 20 MM.....50 cal can fin into a 20 mm.......for $3, $5, $7 bucks....at my favorite surplus store...... Sadly he is about out.

I'm not a prepper or a guy preparing for when SHTF. I don't mean to offend anyone, but there's a lot of preppers (a decent percentage I would say) that purchase equipment and don't know anything about it, or how to use it. They've purchased equipment, because someone said they needed it or it was good to have. That's why you have a large number of BOBs that are overweight being carried by people that don't know how to use the contents. You'd be surprised what the uninformed preppers buy at Army Surplus Stores and Surplus Flea Market booths.
I have a hard enough time remembering where I put my stuff in my house let alone burying it in my yard or at a bug out location! And if i ever did decide to cache some stuff I would do the PVC tube method.

@ hunter, you forgot to mention add the word tactical to an item and you can get 3 times the value. why i just picked up some tactical toilet paper its ruff tough and don't take crap off an a-hole, for the low price of 9,95 a roll want the link before there all sold out?
I saw those ammo cans at HF last trip I ,wasn't sure how good they are so I passed.

I saw them as they were setting up the outdoor sale display.....but had already finished shopping for 2 buck led flashlights W/batteries, (bought 6 more and scattered them out..... put in pockets and vehicles)........so will have to pass for now...not making a trip.....unless they add "tactical" to the name....LOL

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Even today when I pack my pack I'm thinking, "I might need that" only to wind up with a 500lb pack. Then I dump it and start again. It's a sickness. I'm setting up a pack for a couple of weeks in Yellowstone and I pondered over lifeboat matches. I mean, seriously, lifeboat matches? It's a sickness.
