Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I didnt want to start another thread dealing with fire kits, so here goes:

this is one of my ferro rod based fire kits...LMF ferro rod, PJCBs in Ziploc, fatwood, mini BIC, Gerber mini paraframe lock...

this is a small F&S fire kit with a striker I made out of an old file bought at a local flea market...

A close up of the steel. The rubber ranger band gives a surer grip and can be used as a fire extender...

My favorite steel bought from Crazy Crow..

The steel fits in my Brass Hudson Bay Tobacco Box along with some chert, char cloth, jute.

The smalls altoid tin holds some charred cotton thread remnants...

This is yet another F&S kit (can you tell I am passionate about fire making w/F&S?)....all that stuff fits in that leather pouch I made from a leather kit (Hobby Lobby)...

I have a few other kits but these are my main ones... thanx for looking,,,

    Crashdive...

My parents still have a magnifier like the one that you have pictured there, but it's in poor shape, part of the case is cracked. I'm wondering if that was a recent purchase..can you still get those (that you know of), and if so, from where?

Not a recent purchase, but they (or ones like it) are available. If you look for "jewelers loupe" you will find a lot on line.
