I suspect that center mass at 5 yards would be sufficient for the intended purpose.

The Beretta Bobcat .22 is my choice. Reliable!

the beretta and the Taurus have no extractor, so you are utterly dependent upon the polish of the chamber walls and the power of the rd. While it's SA and has some issues that I"ll post about if you like, $100 for a Used Phoenix Arms HP22 is a helluva good deal, if you testfire it first, of course. Quite accurate with 3" barrel, and match grade with the 5" barrel.

Anyone have a Walther P22 with safety issues?? My son bought one last year (nib) and has since had a little issue with $$ and was going to take it back to the Gun store and sell it back, however I know that he would have gotten less half what he paid. So, having part of my Financial aid in safe keeping ( long story, involves having to save 1/3 to cover summer semester since they changed up the program schedule to run straight through with no summer break) I offered to "buy" the gun from them until they get their taxes done. If they decide they no longer want it when they get taxes, then it will be mine for $240.

However now that I have it in hand...the safety does not work. it will fire a round no matter what position the safety is in, I am truely thankful that this is no longer in the house with my grandkids. I really like the gun, but it is gonna be in the shop soon, the boyfriend is going to have the safety fixed. I have no idea how long the safety has been non-functional. Anyone else have this issue with a P22?

Never had that problem with my P-22. I like mine so much that I just bought one for my son.

I have the Walther P22 and love it. Not too big, not too small, and I can hit center mass on human (paper) targets at 50yds.

Nell, I have not had such a problem. Smith and Wesson now owns Walther. If you can find a S&W armorer in your area (or other reputable gun smith), I'm sure they can fix it without too much of an issue.

No. I think I've only tried it once. Just use my finger.

Okay guys, I called my son and told him that I would be taking the gun to have it repaired. He said mom, the safety is fine,it has a "drop" safety that when the safety switch is on,and you pull the trigger,it stops the firing pin from being able to strike the round.. Sometime today, I will load the mag, and give it a try and see if this is indeed the case.

What I know right now is that even with the safety on, the hammer is activated, and what I know about guns is that equated to firing.

When they brought the gun over they did not bring the manual, box, holster, just the gun. I won't take my sons word for it ( although he has awards for his weapons skills while in the service) I and my boyfriend will give it a try today. It is also supposed to have a key that locks the trigger ( this is what I thought the "safety" was supposed to do) they did not bring that either.

If the hammer is back and the safety is on, you can pull the trigger and the hammer WILL drop but it will not fire until you take the safety off. With the safety off and the hammer down, your first trigger pull will be heavier until it fires, at which point will leave the hammer back for subsequent shots making the pull lighter.

    Hope that helps.

With a drop safety, the firing pin is either rotated away or the firing pin gets blocked. Either way, the hammer drops, but the firing pin is not struck to fire the round.

Yep, sure does. My "paranoia" has been calmed, (thanks for the link to the manual also Ken!) If they had simply brought the manual with them than I would have figured this out. I have never had a gun that works this way, always if the safety was on, you could not pull the trigger at all. Old dog learning new tricks. Oh and trying to fire it confirmed all this info as well!
    Thanks guys.

Oh in I did find a post on Youtube where a guy had a catastrophic failure of his P22, when firing it, the slide flew off and backwards striking the shooter in the face. No injuries, but a good reminder why you should wear safety goggles when firing a weapon.

Glad all is well and you didn't have to see a smith.

Just a side note for future reference: Many gun manuals can be found on the manufacture's website. If it is not there, contact the manufacturer and they will send you one free or really close to it. For manufacturers no longer in business, I've had good luck purchasing downloaded manuals from amazon, eBay, gun auction sites or other places that my search engine led me too. I think the most I paid for one was $8. For military guns, check out www.surplusrifle.com for complete disassembly and assembly instructions with color pictures. They can even be printed for free.

Reading this I was thinking how the hell do you screw up the safety on a P22? Glad you got it figured out.

I chose the P22 when I bought a .22 handgun. Though I would buy a Ruger Single Nine Convertible or a Single Ten if I bought another .22 handgun.
