Picking Up A Rifle, Which One?

Hey, Crash. Can I ask what you paid for that? I turned down one two weeks ago that was a US issue in British .303. He wanted $299.00 for it. It had the sticker bayonet, bayonet cover, and strap with it. Late at night that thing keeps calling my name though.

Paid $175. Took a while to talk him down from $250. Some at the show were over $450.

I read that the U.S. issue .303's were manufactured by Winchester back in the day. I think that $175 is about right for a price.

I think you're right. I did some reading on it and if I recall correctly they switched to .308 in short order because they were tooled for .308.

USE: deer and medium-large game hunting
LOCATION: forests of Michigan but I want flexibility to use it in open plains of Alaska or large fields, 200-300 yards
PRICE: under $300 including cheap 3-9x scope
TYPE: Bolt action, more than single shot
WEIGHT: less than 8 lbs preferably

I prefer WWII-era rifles such as, but not limited to, the Kar98, Moisin-Nagent, Lee Enfield, or 1903 Springfield... you know, the bolt action flagship models of each country. They proved themselves to be tough, reliable, and accurate... they are also cheaper than brand new models. However newer rifles will be taken into consideration if reviews are high enough.

NO SURVIVAL RIFLES PLEASE. I may be hunting from the bush but I don't want some 15" barrel, hollow stock, all-synthetic, survival-oriented rifle (no M6).

Consideration must be taken on availability and price of ammunition. I don't want to pay $50 for a dozen rounds because no one makes that type anymore.

Please list your preference as well as appropriate reasoning. Thanks

Try a Remington 700 ADL .308 with synthetic stocks and matte finish scope. It's tough, light, not pricey, and hefty enough to kill most of what you'd want to kill.

I'm going to have to give another thumbs up to the SMLE, mine is the MK1. I don't remember the company, but they make a 'no drill and tap' scope mount for the SMLE. I picked mine up at Big 5 about 20 years ago on sale for $49. Would like to find another in fair shape cause I found a site that shows a 'Tanker' version that someone came up with. I think they called it 'The Bulldog'. Basically they took a MK1 and cut the barrel down to 16-18", then recut and fit the wood back in place.
