    I have to drain the rain barrels because of that. I leave the valves open too in case we get some rain in winter. I generally don't do it until after the first hard freeze because both barrels are next to the house so they are reasonably protected. You might also remember that I planted jewel weed around the barrels and I've got a really nice stand of it now so that helps hold the heat from the house around the barrels. But after the first freeze I drain them. That's 100 gallons I'm down over winter but it's either drain them or take a chance on damaging the barrels.

    The other backup supplies are stored in the garage so I don't have to worry about them freezing.

    I try to look at like I'm 100 gallons up in the summer. I'm a barrel half full kinda guy.
