Has anyone heard of a gov't Power grid outage exercise in November?

I've been seeing a bunch of posts about it on wordpress, tumblr, blogspot etc but nothing official or concrete...yet

So, it appears that it will be a table top exercise with no actual outages.

You won't find a utility company running an exercise that has direct impacts to user. It just doesn't happen.

We performed quarterly disaster exercises. We flew our backup tapes to a hot site, loaded them, rerouted test trunks and test call lines to the hot site and brought everything up online. Everything from call routing to customer billing. As I said, that was performed quarterly and we never impacted customer service. That would be unthinkable and quite costly. The loss of revenue would be staggering. In the millions of dollars an hour range. No utility company wants to take that kind of hit on their customers or their bottom line.

Imagine the loss of revenue to power companies at the grid level. Probably in the billions of dollars. I'm sure they run disaster drills as well but not on the live grid.

But every once in a while it's a good idea to do your own power-out exercise.
Throw the main breaker in your house for the weekend and see how you and the family deal with it.

I don't believe a "on purpose" outage would ever happen, as the restart of everything at once would surely provide a "Bump" that could do a lot of damage.

When we lost power in the factory....had quite a few rectifiers that had to be shut down, so as to soften the re-start, and guard against single phasing.......that where it just hums for a while then burns up.
Quite a scene, dark factory.....several people running and climbing up mezzanines to frantically shut units down.
