1930's coleman gas lamp parts

I have a couple old gas pressure lamps. One is a table top model and one a wall model. One of these days I plan on rebuilding them but where do I get parts? I've googled without much luck. I'm looking for the shades. Any thoughts?

Shades could be a problem. That's about the hardest part to find. There were a lot of gas lamp makers in the '30 and many of them look alike so see if you have a Coleman stamp on them anywhere. Those old lamps used Thorium mantles. Nasty stuff. It's radioactive to the touch and the smoke is toxic. Today they are made from ytrium. You can still buy the old Thorium mantles if you want. They do burn much brighter than today's mantles. You can't take Xrays or anything and your nose won't fall off but there is no reason to take a chance. The Coleman mantles are labeled Silk Lite. There might also be a mantle named Peerless as well as Bryt Lite. I don't know for sure when Coleman stopped making the Thorium mantles [EDIT - 90's according the below article].

The guys at Old Coleman Parts are really great to work with. If it's not list on his web site then give him a call. He has tons of stuff and not all of it is listed. If he doesn't have a part he might know where you can search for it. They have never done me wrong and I've order a lot of stuff through them.

Here's a link to look at some of the early lamps. I'll start you in the after 1920's section. If you don't see any that look like yours when you reach the bottom of the page you can look at other eras and/or manufacturers to see if you can find a look alike.

Finally, finally, keep an eye peeled on ebay. Weird stuff comes up on there all the time. You sometimes get a steel and you sometimes get to pay a premium but if it's that last part you need it might be worth it.

I just thought of something else. Make certain your generator tubes are clear if you try to light them. Spiders love to build nests inside the tubes and they won't burn for crap if they are plugged up. I take some auto wire and strip about a half inch of insulation off of it and spread out the copper wires a bit. Run that through the tube and spin it. If there are spider webs in there it will usually clean them out. Good luck!!

Make sure the tanks are solid, too. You can clean them buy adding some gas and a handful of BB. Close the lid and shake the p waddin's out of it. The BBs will scour any rust off the inside of the tank.
