Of course, there will be battery back-ups for the phone and communicator to go along with this unit if it makes the list. Maybe even a solar charger, too.

We are in the market for something similar. This particular item's reviews are raising some real pain in the @ss issues that make me less than enamored with it.

Same here. One good review out of Five. I've found that sometimes the reviews are right on the money; other times I couldn't disagree more.

They are pretty cool, and you can hack them to send arbitrary messages, or at least you could recently.

Except when they say for a week that you're still on Service Rd in Denair Ca, when you're actually in Utah.

If it's only for emergencies and the tracking feature isn't of concern, a PLB may be a better route to go. They cost more, but there are no annual subscription fees with them.

I'm thinking more in terms of voice communications. I imagine that the SPOT Connect Satellite Communicator will have greater limitations than the Spot Satellite Messenger. My sons each found a Satellite Messenger under the Christmas Tree about 4 years ago.
