One of the guys I work with fell in love with the savage rifle after seeing "Shooter". He ran right out and bought one. He rave's about it, but I haven't had the opportunity to fire it yet, so I can only recommend it on second hand info.

beerrunner, I never thought you were, no worries, besides rifles are all going to be very personal choices. Mitch, I wouldn't go for that Enfield the way you described it, although you can pick up a pretty cool syn. stock (ughh!! to all syn stocks in my opinion), but like you said, if the stock is cracked, you're not going to learn much about the rifle unless you replace the stock, it's starting to look like it's getting out of the price range you were first interested in.

For that you might wanna go with a 30/06 or a .308 remington, easily field stripable, and can cover the distance easily and has a wide game range.
There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.

Why remington Beo? They've got a good reputation, for sure, but you pay for that reputation too. He said >300, so you'll be lucky to get a decent Remington in that range. If you're looking at 2nd hand anyway, which he is, you can look at any manufacturer basically (although your Brownings, Sakos, Tikkas, they're all going to stay overpriced) A good quality firearm doesn't devalue much from what I've noticed.

One of the things I have with "surplus" rifles is from what era they were fabricated and what wear was actually induced through them.

A great number of 8mm WWII firearms have barrels that are scared by corrosive primer/cartridges and of varying bore dia.
A shiny bore is not a mark of reliability, can be produced by vinegar scrubbing the bore.
Sharp lands and grooves go much further to establish accuraccy, but the final proof is going out to a range and test fireing the firearm letting cool , repeating the procedure over again.
Reliability, is another matter will it function if the firearm is hot (having shot 10 rds or so) or will the zero change drastically after repeated shots.
Practicle accurracy the ability of hitting your target at a reasonable distance is a must.
Next is a reliable ammo of stable quality (non corrosive) and actual reliable performance both in function and accurracy.

There a lot more criteria but this is a start

The Swiss made K31's are a very nice rifle but the round is a bit exotic.
Fortunately S&B and some other companies are making 7.5 Swiss now.

h8 - Here's a write up on the K31. Read the bolt safety issue.

I owned both the Schmidt Rueban and a K31. Both awsome rifles, both very accurate, both have been sold.

Finding ammo was a pain in the butt. A few internet sites had ammo that was not bad as far as pricing, but then you add in shipping. FMJ rounds were a cheap, the hunting rounds were what was pricy.

Can't beat the Remington model 700 chambered in .308. Good all around shooter.

Here is my FR-8 chambered in 308. It is the size of an M-1 Carbine, only on steroids.

I like the shortys. I am looking for a 20" mossberg vr barrel now for a shotgun conversion. Don't want to spend alot of money and fig. since I like the look of wood, I will keep the wood stocks.

The 20" barrel is vent ribbed, with an accuchoke. You can screw in the three diff. chokes, this also allows you to shoot the old style rifled slugs. Rifled slugs are good up to about 100 yards. So, in a snap, I can have buck, slug, or 4 shot for a variety of critters and uses.

Also plan on getting the tube extender, prob. an extra two shells. It will be compact and easy to tote through the thickets for hogs. Face it, a slug, a hog, equals bbq.

Hey, Crash. Can I ask what you paid for that? I turned down one two weeks ago that was a US issue in British .303. He wanted $299.00 for it. It had the sticker bayonet, bayonet cover, and strap with it. Late at night that thing keeps calling my name though.

I just like the old style military rifles.

I personally think that 300 bucks is a bit much. But that's me. You can find deals on a variety of sites and for 25 bucks have it shipped to your FFL dealer in your area.
