Glad you made it out ok. Sometimes people are so set on doing something that they forget that there are legitimate reasons to alter plans. People push themselves and end up dead.

The only thing that I would say is that I would not do what you did by myself. I am a firm believer in the buddy system. It is easy to fall down a steep mountain face or get injured in some other way. If there is a buddy then there is someone to go for help.

Sometimes there is no buddy option. Most of the women my age that I know are not interested in my kinds of adventures. I am fighting tooth and nail to not become a fat, old lady; sadly a fight lost by many.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

I know that. I started out a young skinny guy and I'm quickly turning into a fat old lady. Sad.

1stime yes. I asked everyone I knew. All had the same answer. Screw that. I'm a loner on my interests and hobbies. Most are too dangerous for my friends to consider. Even if one or two are thinking about it they don't have the pile of cash to get geared up.

It's probably all in the presentation. If you ask, "Hey, wanna go hiking and get altitude sickness?" They probably will back down anyway. You have to let the last part be a surprise.

57 miles is an accomplishment. Considering Altitude sickness, it's pretty amazing. I had it once in Co Springs. I didn't think of it either as I had spent 3 days in Albuquerque prior to heading out, I was in pretty good shape, and didn't make it 57 miles. Makes you feel like dirt especially for a sea level boy like myself.

RR, that was nowhere near a failure, bro you did all those miles (57), sick, but drove on. You learned a lesson too and gained knowledge on altitude sickness which you can now recognize in yourself and others, and made it out. You Ranger'd Up, drove on and came out to back up, regroup, and replan. As was stated you got out and did it instead of armchair quarterbacking it, and the fact people were willing to help you proves that people like you and others here are still out there. What a great trip you had.
Maybe next year I'll tag along if you'll have me.
    You rock soldier.

There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.

I'm not sure why you consider your endeavor a failure? People get ill and to have the intelligence to evac and recoup shows a true Survival drive! Dropping dead out there would only show stupidity. Try it again sometime but maybe bring a like-minded partner along to share in the work? Good luck on your future challenges... Mike
