22 pistol

After requal today I was thinking of picking up a 22 pistol. I kind of like the Walther P22. The Ruger seemed heavy. The Berreta too small. So, goldielocks is thinking of the Walther. Does anybody know anything about the P-22?

Rebel - I have a Ruger Single Six in .22/22mag and I don't have any complaints with it. I'm a wheel gun man myself so I don't know anything about the P-22. Sorry.

Thanks Rick. I had forgotten about the Colt Frontier 22 wheel gun the X stole. It was nice. I should look at the single six.

Mine came with 2 cylinders. One for the 22 and one for the 22mag. Sort of two guns in one.

I have a few, Beretta, High Standard, S&W, Ruger single six and Ruger Mark I & II. I have a Walther I carry a Walther but it's a 380. Personal preference Ruger single six, semi auto - Ruger Stainless with 5" bull barrel. One you can put in your shirt pocket Beretta Mod. 25, great little semi and very accurate. The P-22 is a good 22 but IMHO very overpriced. I have a 4X Leupold on another Ruger and can keep a mag inside a quarter at 40yds off rest. If I was gonna use it in all kinds of weather I would go stainless.

I have a S&W 22A and like it very much. I don't have any experience with the others you listed, though.

I've shot the P-22. Liked it OK but don't own one. For 22 hand guns I've got a Smith and Wesson 22A-1 with a Red Dot sight. Too big and heavy for carry, but a nice target piece. I've also got a little Jennings J-22. I do not recommend it to anybody for any reason. Somebody gave me $5 to take it from them. (not really, but they threw it in on a gun trade to get rid of it)

I've got a Raven .25 that falls in that category. I'm about half afraid to pull the trigger on it 'cause I don't know which end will go boom.

I have an old H&R 9 shot top break with a six inch barrel. It shoots nice and is light for it's size. I have a few pistols but I mostly they are keepsakes.

The H&R Model 999 is a real classic. I have one in 4".

But my favorite .22LR is the Original Smith & Wesson Model 17 in blued, mine has TT, TH, TS. It is pure sweetness.........

However it is not for the Stainless Steel Crowd

Is that in the 8 3/8 " barrel? S&W makes a sweet wheel gun. I was looking at a used Mod 29 Alaskan today and thought of you in alaska. It's got a nice picture of the state on the side.

This decision is turning out to be harder than expected. I'm sure anything would be great but, you want the perfect hardware. Some pieces will allow a threaded barrel and other misc. items. Could be alot of fun.

Yes, my M-17 is 8 3/8" My first choice would be the 6" barrel on the Model 17. I reamed out 3 of the cylinders to .22 Mag. and the other three are .22LR

Rebel, Will this .22LR just be for general .22 "STUFF" or do you have a number #1 primary special thing you want it to do......??? Are your the person that shoots .22LR "Rifles" in competition? And buy's $10.00 a box ammo for their .22LR Rifle?

Spend some time at a shop and just handle various makes and models. See what fits your hand and feels right. One or two models will just talk to you. Then, if you can, shoot those models and see if they hold up the conversation. You can rent weapons at some shooting ranges so check around and see who rents and what models they offer. Or...talk to a friend or two that has those models and then take them to a range. Unless you have that contract hit you need to wrap up, you're right, there is no need to be impatient.

I appreciate you all taking the time to give me the requested advise. It has been very helpful . In answer to a question, the purpose would be for general plinking and practice. I'll have to see which feels right and if I can shoot them.
