Nice, but sucking straws is lame.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

I dont think its a Straw, because there is a dwell time after filtering before drinking the water. I read thru the site but Its kind of vague.

hmmm. So basically it mixes fresh water with salt to turn it into brine, and then zaps it to create a solution which you then use to treat water you are going to consume. So I'm guessing the ionized salt molecules are what deactivate the bacteria/viruses/protozoa. I don't think this would remove any toxins/pollutants in the water, however. But with no filter to replace and simple batteries and salt needing to run the thing, I think it might be a perfect addition to an emergency kit. Are these being offered for sale already? I couldn't find that on the website.

Another thought I just had, if all there is to it is salt, a couple of AA batteries and untreated water from whatever source, I wonder how hard it would be to make one of these.

That is pretty interesting. Cascade Designs no longer offers them so it looks like their partnership with Miox has ended. I wonder if it has been taken off the market for some reason?

MSR made the only MIOX filters I ever ran across. Those were several years ago. Seems like they never sold to well. I never tried one out.
I am pretty sold on the Sawyer brand. The zero point two model in particular.

I have heard about it before. But, there are a few things that make it something that I won't consider. First is the price, hey I am cheap. I saw a Sawyer Squeeze at Walmart the other day for $29. That sure beats the $100+ of miox. I also don't like my water filter to run on batteries. Plus the sawyer is lighter and doesn't need replacement filters. I also like the convenience of "instant" clean water. I don't have to wait for chemicals to work. Of course, any filter has it's drawbacks. Any filter will clog, and almost all filters aren't good against viruses (Sawyer does have one that is.....but it is heavier and more expensive). Of course, viruses generally aren't a concern.

Most filters will filter them out and prevent them from getting in your clean water. Look for a filter with the words "reverse osmosis". Those will protect against Crypto as will any filter with an absolute pore size smaller than 1 micron. If the filter is less than 1 micron you will exclude both Crypto and Ghiardia. But look for the term "absolute" with regard to pore size. Otherwise, the size of the pores will be variable and can pass some buggies.
