    Default protection in woods

I am wondering what kind of protection you guys have when in woods? I am not talking about guns. I live in a area with woods just about all around me. Things like knives, sticks you carry etc. I have been told there is a bobcat around and i looked you them and it said to carry/use a wristle to scare it/them etc away. Any other things? thanks

If you rule out handguns then I usually carry several different sized knives and a walking stick. I suppose they might serve as protection of sorts. Animals will generally try to stay away from you unless you just happen upon each other or the animal is sick. I would imagine the only thing you'll see of a bobcat are its footprints.

^ That was my first thought too.
    LOL
I don't use it, but I've heard there is pepper spray for bears and such.
Never understood the bear bell thing either. Nothing like a walk through the woods sounding like Santy Claus

Sunscreen, and bug spray.... But seriously, I am never without a firearm in the woods, So I would say a good knife, a machete, or a walking stick .

I'm a walking stick guy my self, and rarely carry firearms in the woods unless I'm hunting....but that has been changing with the CC law here.

I have never been afraid of much of anything in the woods, the biggest thing in the woods around here would be a black bear....and I have never seen one walking or sitting....smelled them though.

As has been brought up...animals don't want anything to do with you.

On my walks in the city (small-ish) I carry a walking stick as well, and have beat off dogs, that were after my dog......but I'm much more comfortable in the woods than the city.

Working as a service guy, there were several areas that you didn't go to at night, and if you did you carried even though it wasn't really legal.
The CC law made a lot of people legal, but really didn't change much.

If I'm not carrying, then I carry bear spray.

Always have a good knife with me. A cow cane to steady me on uneven ground, maybe a pistol or not depending on the area. There is a rifle, pistol in the truck.

I carry a knife all the time. Here in my woods there is nothing to fear. I have jumped black bears, coyotes and bobcats in the past, very rare though.
so the definition of a criminal is someone who breaks the law and you want me to believe that somehow more laws make less criminals?

A walking stick and a fixed blade knife with at least a 5" blade, the only dangerous animal in this area is the mountain lion or the occasional pissed off big horn sheep, although lately the most dangerous walks on two legs as it tends its drug lab.

Its not the 4 legged critters that I worry about when out and about

I take bear spray when in bear areas. Cougars are the only other worry. A wedding ring "generally" keeps them away. Well, so does old age.
