Stories you tell little kids

Did you ever tell your kids stories when they were real little? Like if they don't clean their room that big wasp out there will pull out a hair to use in its nest.

Or there's a troll that lives under the bridge that goes over the 1 foot wide stream. And he likes to eat kids that don't eat their vegetables.

I'm not talking about things every American kids knows, like the Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny. I'm talking about stories that are more specific to a family.

Growing up in SW La., my brother and I were told that when we misbehaved or didn't do something when told that "Big Mo" would be paying us a visit.
Big Mo had the body of a human and the head of an alligator.

So... naturally I would use that on my two sons, even though we live in NE Illinois.
Can't say if it ever worked or not but they do bring it up from time to time.

My favorite was....think of all of the poor starving children in (pick a place) so finish your vegtables. They stopped doing it when I asked my mom where to address the envelope with broccolli in it.

A while back, Mrs Catfish and I went to a party down in the town. It was one of these "Bring a dish of something" deals but as usual we left it to the last minute and didn't have anything prepared. So, we decided to swing by a supermarket and pick up one of those pre-cooked chickens. They're pretty good, and always go down well.

I have a little friend who at the time was 9 and as she also lives in the mountains, couldn't understand how we'd kept the chicken warm all the way from home.

"Well," I told her "we ran over it just near the house, so I plucked it there and then, strapped it to the exhaust and let it cook while we drove here. That's why we were a bit late - I had to drive round the block a couple of times to make sure it was cooked through. You don't want to eat road kill that hasn't been properly cooked."

Her eyes got real big.
"You eat road kill?"
"Oh, like you've never done that."
"I haven't!" she protested.
"Sure you have. Why do you think your Mom's so keen to get you out of the car when she drops you off at school some mornings? It's because she's seen a good bit of road kill and wants to get back to snag it before someone else does."

Her eyes were like saucers by now and she ran across the room to where her mother was sitting. I saw them bow their heads together as the question was asked. Then I saw her mother roll her eyes, look over at me and tell her...

"It's just Catfish...you should know by now!"

I love kids.

One year I bought my brothers kids little black leather biker jackets for Christmas and gave them to the kids a few days early. They asked me why and I told them becuse thier Dad had hit the Lotto and was getting everyone dirt bikes. He was mad at me for a while but his wife to this day dislaikes me.

When my youngest son was about 9 or 10 years old, he had a friend whose mom was very protective of him. It took a long time for his mother to agree to let him spend the night.

We live on a small lake and I have a fire pit out close to it where I would sit drinking a few brews. It was one evening I was out there when my son and his friend came out and they were throwing rocks in the lake and just being kids.
I asked my son's friend if he knew the history of this little lake, to which he did not.

I started telling him that it was a man made lake and that before that it was a cemetery. I mentioned that they didn't bother moving the contents of the graves before dozing a big hole and that on occasion we would find a bone washed up on the shore.

So ended the first and last attempt for my son's friend to spend the night and my son, to this day reminds me of how pissed he was.
