Fire piston and wood punk...any successes?

Been trying to use punk as tinder in my piston.. I can get it to catch an ember but not hold one.. Does anyone know the trick to using this?

I haven't had any luck with a home made fire piston at all.

Might be a cool thing for some, but I have many other ways to get fire, and I consider them an expensive toy.

If you have to bring it with you, it's isn't a true survival tool, unless you can make one from found materials.

I bring what ever works easiest to use and get good results.....or in this case fire.

That said, I have had good luck getting an ember or coal using char cloth, with flint and steel, ferro rod and steel, burning glass.

Might want to char your "punk" (Burn in the absence of air)

Fire pistons do not impress me much.

If you have to take it with you Bic makes a fine fire starter that is half the size and 10% of the price and a fire piston does not fit on your keychain like a ferro rod does.

I made a fire piston just to see if I could. Not a huge fan of them, but they are kind of cool. Never tried punk wood - only char cloth. You may want to char the punk wood to see if that works.
