Cool Boots in the field...Fantastic Fungus Find!

Found a Morel growing by the porch of a nearby house today. All the experts say that finding Morels in the climate we've been having will not be fruitful! Raspberries! Headed out to the woods and picked about 2 dozen! Sorry Ken, somebody stole yours!

hunter, that Sarge has been promising me morels for the last 5 years. I hope he falls asleep when that morel's in the pan and he doesn't wake up 'till it's burned to a crisp. I even hope the raspberries go moldy on him.

I just had a guy drop by 4 days ago who showed me a shopping bag an a half of 3 to 5 inch long morels he picked out back of the little town I live in. I asked him where (as it's a BIG place them thar woods) he answered, "oh just out back, we walked in the trail and scouted up and back down the hills". My daughter and i walked back in a trail and searched around we found squat. I recall a few years ago seeing a few along the river in another area so we searched it as well but again nothing. We have mostly paper birch and various pines. There's so many dead limbs laying about the bush plenty leaves from last fall but no sign of a single Morel. Did find one lone mushroom of another sort but being as I had no clue what it was we left it. Does anyone know of anything that might narrow the search down somewhat from hundreds of hectares to anything more reasonable?

Morels aren’t very common here. The best hauls come from areas that have been burnt over and within a few years.

False Morels are easy to distinguish from the real thing. True Morels grow in the spring, are one piece, and are hollow. False Morels grow in the fall, are two-piece, and solid.....

Our false morel grows at the same time and in the same habitat as the true morel. Our false morel is more like an umbrella and is not attached to the stem at the bottom of the umbrella like a true morel. I ate the false morel every year with the rest of them as a boy. I also ate the brain or beefsteak mushroom many times. I no longer eat these false morels since the local papers warn against them every mushroom season. I have know people who have become sick when they ate large fry pans of only false morels.
I did get about a half a peck of the blacks when I took a guy from downstate out for an hour or two to show him how to find them. I intended to give them to him, but he said he didn't want them so I was happy.

I found several pounds of morels today. They were at a Farmer's Market and listed at $40 a pound. A POUND!!
