I was told a long time ago...south sea islands WWII....Torpedo juice....torpedo fuel, mixed with pineapple juice or what ever.

The delicious elixir to which you refer is called Gilly. Sadly - the advent of more efficient propellants for torpedoes caused Gilly to go by the wayside.

I actually had an uncle, a marine, that was pretty heavily into Gilly. Not to mention after shave or anything else that contained alcohol. Sadly, it did him in but not before he completed 4 years in the Pacific and 12 months in Korea. Wounded three times. So I guess he earned the right to forget however he could.

An interesting aside, shortly after landing on Betio Atoll (Tarawa) he was wounded in the legs by machine gun fire. He spent the night inland from the beach, still under fire, and unable to make his way back to the beach. He was found the next day by a Navy landing craft pilot that would be awarded the Bronze Star for saving 77 Marines on shore and in the water all while under fire. That pilot's name was Eddie Albert. Yeah, the actor to be.

Those island people are still fond of SPAM......the eating kind.

MF being on a B-29 flight crew, were afforded beer that a lot of people didn't get....and was customary to pile the cases of empties of 12 oz bottles in the bomb-bay doors.....first couple of planes in a raid, dropped them with the bombs made a whistling sound, gunners on the ground would take cover.....don't know if it was true or not....made a good story.

That is a pretty cool tale.
