    Default Need help: handmade knife

making a knife is one of the few things I have yet to attempt. I have never worked with metal so I don't know where to start. I have been told that a lawnmower blade can make a good knife, has anyone tried this? I assume one would use a grinder to shape it... I have no idea. I would love to hear some idea's how I could make a decent knife with just the basic tools (if that is possible)

Here's one way. It is a 10 part video I did - hopefully it helps.

I haven't tried a totally from scratch knife yet, but I have done a Knifekit project (premade blade, add your own handles). If you want to just ease your way into it, this might be an option, especially if you don't yet have the equipment to work with blade steel.

Thanks Crash! Man, I doubt I will ever get that good, that is one fine look'n blade.
For the most part I think I can get together the tools or improvise but not sure how I could heat the blade with that high of a temp without one of those ovens. Do you think I could get a hardwood fire that hot?

Before I had a heat treat oven I went through some experimenting with propane and fire bricks. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...emporary+forge

Hey Stiffy, I have no doubt that the knife kit would turn out much better than what I rig up, I am just very stubborn with projects and usually take the long way to see where I end up lol.

That looks like a forge I could rig up, I've been wanting to get a tiger torch anyway so this will be a good excuse. I doubt I will start this project until spring but it gives me a good idea on what I need to keep an eye out for. I will post some pics once I get going.

No problem. I understand the urge to do it all yourself. I also have that urge, just haven't made the leap yet.
