    Default TOPIC:throwing knives practicality

ok so i have bin dealing with throwing knives for a few years now all different brands styles sizes at all different targets sizes and materials from different distances ranging out to 40 feet as i feel its a crap shoot any farther out so as far as hunting i dont think that they would come in handy for like canadian geese cuz you can get close but hell you could do em bare handed too lol as for anti personnel i think they would do jus fine geting stuck with a blade will slow em down at least so let me know guys an here are a few pics and a video i did and im just wondering what your experiences thoughts and feelings on throwing knives are thank you for viewing and responding IMG_20111128_160403.jpgIMG_20111206_171714.jpgIMG_20120128_135548.jpgIMG_20120128_135555.jpg

I can survive in the wilderness with one knife and I ain't throwing it anywhere. I may need it later.
For me, carrying a set of throwing knives is useless weight but that's just me.

I just have a problem with throwing my tools at something....unless its just for fun.

Hope you don't lose them, or have plenty.

Not even something I would consider....rather use a sling shot...or just throw a club or rock.

If we are going to get primitive, I can throw my atlatl dart farther than you can throw your knife.

And now I have your knife!

I've thrown a few knives in the past. It was games we played as kids, stretch and chicken.

I think it is good to practic every option, even the deseperate ones. Throwing a knife is, in my idea, the last thing to do. So better not fail.

Throwing for fun is one thing. I have done a lot of that with knives and hawks at the rondys.

I might take a swat at a rabbit on the ground if I was hungry. A throwing stick would be just as good, probably better if i did not wish to cdamage the blade.

Throwing as a defense I would only do if I were attempting a distraction so I could draw my gun while the other guy ducked.

Seems to me that with a lot of practice one could get fairly good with one at a close distance. That being said while it may be intertaining maybe one should see if that time spent should be spent doing something that would help your family out. But thats just me.......time is short. mwp

Once you throw your knife you don't have it anymore.

This is the base line of common sense.

Throwing stars are illegal here. Throwing knives are illogical here. (That's my best Spock impersonation).

The thunk of a knife sticking into a wood round is one of the most satisfying sounds you will ever hear.

I would not spend alot of money on throwing knives, cheap is better. Mine is so cheap, I just leave it in the massive round I use as a target. Keep a couple small diameter logs laying around to straighten the bent ones.

If I could throw amazing well, I may consider the idea of throwing a real knife for survival purposes.

Harry McEvoy(?) throwing knife guru, killed a German sentry silently at some stupid range , like 54 ft. He could have survived using them. Look up his story, it's a great read.

If you intend to used a thrown knife to gather food make sure it's a large one. Ninja stars and the little ones won't have the weight for kills and would be over-effected by wind and possible obstacles.

Back when I could hit 1/2's, 1's, and 1 1/2's consistently, I was throwing a pretty sweet German stag handled bowie.
    One of these.

I would have felt pretty confident in throwing that at small game at 20 ft. It would be as effective as a throwing stick with a blood trail. The target game wouldn't run far with a pound of steel hanging out of them.

As far as practicality, I guess people should learn to throw for fun and they may have the option to test it later.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

ctdcb18b: I'm afraid not. Should I ever feel the urge while shooting video, I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

I have never been able to make a knife stick, and normally just tear my knife up when I try!
