Auroras came out tonight.

This is the first real show we've had that we haven't had too much cloud cover. Along with my new cabin comes a new secret aurora photographing location. This year I am working on taking reflections of the auroras. Unfortunately, with my gloves on, my fingers are more clumsy and I accidentally changed my ISO without realizing it. So these first photos are pretty "noisy". I'm using up too much internet as I have a usage cap with this crap *** company I am having to use but you should all be able to see them here as I made them viewable to the public.

With solar flare activity....they have seen them way further south than normal.....I have yet to see them with the naked eye.....but I have seen them with my NVDs.

I was on one of my evening walks...and noticed some bizarre clouds....lifted the goggles and realized it was clear....looked it up the next day....I wasn't alone.

The aurora is one of the things I miss the most about my time spent in Northern Labrador. I would never cease to be awestruck. Thanks eh!

Oh my gosh I am kicking myself! You know the other night I took some aurora photos but they all turned out noisy because I accidentally changed my ISO from 400 to 800. Hard to maneuver the camera on the tripod with gloves on without touching this part of the camera. Well tonight we had a magnificent show so I rushed right out to photograph them. And forgot to change my ISO back to 400. ARGGG! But I did figure out how to use my 2 second delay timer so as to prevent fuzzies from slight movement caused by pushing the button. Oh yea, we also had a bit of a scare. I'll just copy and paste that part.

Well I was standing out there in my secret aurora photographing location enjoying the show. Olivia was with me. I no longer look at my secret spot quite so fondly as "something" scared the crap out of us. Twice. I have since found another lovely little spot that is not quite out in the woods.

At first I thought it was just the long grass blowing in the wind. It was pretty breezy and we aren't used to much of that. Then I heard it again. Something, "right over there". We were standing on the drivers side of my 4 runner. I told Olivia to go get in. She didn't know anything was going on. By the time she got around to her side she was saying, "what is it what is it!!!!!?" That kid can move fast. We jumped in and I turned on the headlights and could see NOTHING! No, moose or bear or even a little fox. So after a few minutes to let my heart quit beating out of my chest, and talking to Lori on the phone. The lure of the lightshow and my camera, which was still on the tripod out in the meadow, forced me back outside. Olivia stayed in, I stood by my door. After a while, I heard it again. Jumped back in the car for a while. Rinse, repeat. Third time I gave up. I'm not big on getting scared. On the way home though, we found a perfect little spot with no power lines and got the auroras right over our cabin.

The aurora is something I have always wanted to see again. I have only seen them once, back in the 1950s, when a CME made them visible as far south as Tennessee. I was about 10 then and still remember them.

Yea I had my ISO set too high. Really really kicking myself. My daughter came in from the outhouse and told me that the lights were really going crazy so I immediately started rushing around to find more batteries, put my camera on the tripod and get some warmer clothes on. It was below freezing. In all the rush I forgot to change my ISO from the previously accidentally changed 800 back to 400!

Wow that must have been a big one to be able to see them that far south. I've seen them in Northern Minnesota but never saw them when I lived in Norther Montana.

Some good pics but pics of it don't do it justice at all. Even video fails to capture the enormity of the phenomena.

I meant the noise that went bump in the night.

I don't know! I even took a picture of the area thinking with the long exposure maybe I could make something out when I got back home to the computer but no. No idea.
