Nalgene Cantene

Has anyone ever used a Nalgene Cantene? I just recently got one of these and it is a very nice addition to add to a small survival kit.

I don't use the Nalgene canteen but I do carry a Platypus water bottle. Like the Nalgene, they are collapsible so take up very little room. But they sure are nice if you intend to stay put for more than one day. A lot less trips to the water source. They even make a 4 liter tank.

I have a Platypus water bottle also. I do prefer that to the Nalgene Cantene, mainly the wide mouth does not allow it to fold up as much as the Platypus bottle. I need to get an adaptor for my water filter for the Platypus water bottle. I didn't know they had them for bikes... going to have to get me some for our bikes. Thanks for the link.

For those that have not used them, the down side is the water can taste a bit like plastic and they can be a bit more difficult to clean. If you own a bladder system then the brush is pretty good to help clean the platypus bottle. Otherwise, just fill it with warm soapy water and shake it like a martini. In this case, shaken, not stirred is the preferred method.

Rick, that second link to the bikebag.. kind of looks like a catheter.. I assume it is filled with gatorade?? strange color for just plain water.

However, I use a bladder system that is in the backpack I carry and two military canteens on the belt. I was wondering how I was going to clean the bladder.. just soap and water huh?

The bladder systems use a brush. I don't use the system but I've looked at them and stayed away for that very reason. I want something that works and is easy to clean.

My Platypus isn't as large as the bladder systems but larger than a Nalgene so I just use soap and water and take out my frustrations by giving it a good shaking.

What kind of bladder system do you use? I use a Camelbak... they have a cleaning kit for it. They use a cleaning tablet to kill bacteria, but I did some research and you can use one teaspoon of clorox instead of the expensive tablets.

I have a 3L Camelbak reservoir with the drinking tube but I think I'll be replacing it with a 2.5L Platypus sometime in the next couple months for the sheer weight-saving and my Osprey Aether70 hydration sleeve doesn't fit the 3L very well.

Yep, I know what you mean by weight.. and it also pushes the pack out more making it off center. I go lighter in the pack because of that.. Lately I have been thinking of just going with the one or two canteens and using the bladder pouch for something else.
