Complete the requirements for the BSA Wilderness Survival merit badge
Build a survival bow and shoot it
Start a fire on a rainy day using a fire steel and materials available in the woods
Go on a hike and prepare your meal on the trail

I look at this as a chance for this collective to develop a template. Sure, the basics are going to be a bit mundane for some. But, that first aid kit/kits needs maintenance and it's just possible that everyone can pick up a trick or two along the way. Think of someone that is green and what skills they need.
The intermediate/advanced topics will come soon enough, and should have a foundation to build on.

I think it's great to see this much interest. I like the concept of starting out with the basics. These can be great teaching/learning exercises. The more that participate the better. Telling a bunch of people to do an activity might yield some learning, but participating with the group will increase the odds (and fun) that the learning is meaningful.
I agree that these may be basic skills that have been mastered by many long ago and may seem boring. If so why not enlist someone who is not a Master Bushcrafter or a King Wilderness and pass your experience and skills along to them? I know that anytime I teach someone to do something I am usually the one that ends up learning something. In this way you would get a bonus, teaching someone else a skill plus picking up a little something for yourself at the same time.
I also like the idea of this being continued after this first voted on task has been completed. I had a thought about the next one. Instead of going through the voting process again what would be wrong with just doing the next one that received the second most votes? If there is an equal amount of votes just simply flip a coin or something. I intend to do all of them anyway since I think it is such a cool idea and I always need to practice even the most basic of skills.

I think the input of the sourdoughs, as well as the tenderfeet, will make for a nice dynamic even at the basic level.
I would start fresh with the nominations every time. That should not exclude any of the previous nominations from being used again (except those that have been tasked), they would just have to be renominated.

Well....you could take your compass on a rainy hike, ID some plants along the way, start a fire, cook an egg, make a bow string and bow, build a shelter, spend the night, go home the next day, use your first aid kit to fix the cuts, bites and scratches. Hopefully that would earn your merit badge and call it done.
I'm all for the basics. I feel that I could try something, post my results and get valuable feedback. That is how I started to learn about fire late last fall. Besides, shouldn't learning be more valuable than earning other's approval? I would rather improve my skills than get a "Boots in the Field" award, although I wouldn't mind one!

By participating and recording our progress we'll create a composite from varying results. The same task done by many people, under different conditions, will demonstrate how conditions, knowledge, and experience effects the outcome. Failures are as important as accomplishments so do not leave them out. By participating you provide information through experience instead of just theory.
Posting pictures and video helps tremendously but posting notes from a training journal is also important.
Use services like Photobucket and YouTube to store your pictures and video, then create links from your posts.

Looks like we have a winner - make a personal first aid kit. There should be quite a few people participating in this exercise. Since 24 people voted and several others offered suggestions and comments in the original thread - there should be about 30 participants. If you have one (or several) already, make another. If you cannot use it, then give it to somebody that can. If you do not have one, then this is the perfect time to get started. After this project has run its course, then we'll put up ideas for another one.
Post your completed project in this thread. If you are able to take pictures or a video, that's great. If not - you will have to paint a picture with your words.
hi all here is my personal first aid kit. i put it together in a spam tin , i really the size of those things .
Contents : band-aids, antibiotic ointment, burn gel, iodine pad, alcohol pad, butterfly closures, 3x3 gauze pad, tape, dental floss w/cutter, toothpicks, tooth paste, & a toothbrush , chap stick.
i think its a pretty well rounded pocket size kit . here is a couple of pics .

I already tried to make a wet fire and had uber fail (Documented in my utube channel). Not in the mood for yet another fail of the same project though...

I like the first aid kit idea. My son just became a Weblos scout and I was hoping that it was one of his requirements (it is a requirement for the first aid merit badge, but he is too young to earn that). But, it looks like it isn't one for that age group. I will still help him build one, and my older daughter will join in and build one for herself as well. Here are the requirements that he does need:

It does say he needs to show how to use a first aid kit, so making a kit will help him with that requirement. I will be sure to document the whole exercise. I also found out that I can buy first aid supplies with my FSA account. Looks like first aid kits all around.

When the Webelos bridge over to the Boy Scouts they start working to earn their first four ranks; Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class. There are first-aid requirements for the last three ranks including to make a first-aid kit for the Second Class requirement 7b. Many Boy Scout troops have their new scouts start working on the First Aid Merit Badge as soon as possible. They normally don't work on merit badges until they have earned the rank of First Class, but the first aid merit badge is an exception. It's not easy, so for young scouts it takes some work, but with a good counselor they do pretty good. The current first-aid merit badge requirements require the scout to complete all of the first-aid requirements for the ranks through First Class plus many other things. They are allowed to work on any rank requirements up to First Class no matter what their current rank is. These things must be done after they become a Boy Scout to count toward their rank and merit badge requirements.
It's never too early to start teaching first-aid, boy scouts continue practicing their first-aid skills the whole time their in scouts.

QUESTION OF CLARIFICATION:
When we are to build a Personal First Aid Kit, what exactly is meant by the word "PERSONAL?" Does this mean...
[ ] - ...it must be pocket-sized and be on our person, every day, all day, as an EDC item? Or...
[ ] - ...it must be custom designed to address known personal weakness and personal medical needs? Or...
[ ] - ...it must fit our personal vision of an adequate first aid kit to have on-hand/near-by at home, in the car, at camp, etc.? Or...
[ ] - ...WHAT does it refer to?
