    Default Skills/Preparedness Challenge Voting

Time to get this started. Hopefully everybody that posted in the input thread That can be found here will participate, just as everybody that votes. The more people involved the better. You might learn something or teach somebody something. Either way it's a win.

I've added a 10th selection (the max a poll can contain). Due to size limitations, see post 45 of the thread that got us going. Here it is

This is a great idea for a thread Crash, thanks for putting this together. I may have to challenge myself to complete all of them! I had trouble deciding which one to do!

I'm in but just for the fun of it being I do these things professionally. Not saying I can do them better than any of you, but because of my job I have more time to get out and do them.

    I'm in crash.
When it was time for me to move on from Webalos (sp?), I was kinda shoved into a new troop. Now, things weren't right from the start, but on the first night of a 3 night excursion, we were camped in a wash, my buddy and I objected, then hiked out on our own.
Some years later, I was an Asst Scout Master...great experience.
I don't remember a survival badge, but that's what I voted for, because it is about time I got one.

I went with the first aid kit. Some of the others would be more fun but, treating injuries would take priority. Hopefully, treating cuts and burns will not come with the other challenges but if they do, perhaps we'll be prepared.

Something to keep in mind - this is just the first one. After its done we'll start again and can put the 9 that aren't selected up for a vote if that's what folks want.

Build a debris shelter alone and then spend one night in it ALONE

Never done that. I don't think a debris hut is of much use down here.

Make a personal first aid kit
    Done that.

Make a 6ft piece of rope with natural materials, by hand, with at least 20 pounds of strength
How are we limited? I can use a vine to hold 20lbs. I can make a fiber rope that will match any store bought manila rope. Those dinosaur trees are loaded with fibers.

3-5 IDs of poisonous plants and 3-5 non-poisonous plants that have a specific use
Water Hemlock, Castor Bean. Rosary bead, Coontie, Poison Ivy, Poke Salat. Coontie, Spanish Needles, Poke Salat, Sour Orange, Saw Palmetto, Cabbage Palm...

Cooking an egg on a stick
Done and posted pick a year or two ago here on this forum.

Complete the requirements for the BSA Wilderness Survival merit badge
    Have to learn them

Build a survival bow and shoot it
Done this when I was a kid many times. But, there should be a range and impact requirement in my opinion. Also if you carry arrows and no bow, WTF? Make it all from scratch.

Start a fire on a rainy day using a fire steel and materials available in the woods
We get a lot of "country boys" that come from up north that try to light oak with lighter fluid when its wet. LOL
Its a hobby of mine showing Yankees how to light a fire after a torrential down pour.

Go on a hike and prepare your meal on the trail
Is this prepare your meal on the trail from stuff you find on the trail or stuff you bring?

    Compass navigation
What are the parameters for this?

Anyway, looks like fun either way.

I'll just comment on the two that I suggested. The survival bow I said that you could build your own arrows if you like OR shoot a ready made one. I did say that the bow should be capable of taking small game, that would cover both range and impact.
The parameters of the compass navigation are in the previous thread, it's all laid out there.

I think, to make it interesting, some of our more experienced members (you know who you are) will have to be blindfolded and have their hands tied behind their backs.

Oh that's just inspired. Can you imagine the ensuing mayhem from Alaska to Florida and all points between.
