The Shanghai Composite (SSEC) peaked at about 6120 in October and is trading now below 3900... the Nikkei peaked around 18100 last July and the last trade so far was around 11725... lawdy lawdy... some things actually lost more than the buck...
And what a sad time for so many who are the victims. Last warning, get out now.![]()

I'm with WarEagle on this one, I don't really give a crap what happens, too many people place too much on this stuff and personally if you sit around glued to the tv for this crap you have waaaaaaaaay to much time on your hands.

Bear Stearns paper is not necessarily worthless. It will be exchanged for Chase. The conversion rate will be critical IF Chase converts and I would think they would. They have some of the same creditors that Stearns had. And the SEC would probably come down on them from an employee perspective if they didn't. Now would be a good time since the price of Chase is down it should only appreciate no matter what the conversion rate is. It may never match what they were holding, however, and probably won't.

Today may be a bad day for financials. My portfolio will probably take quite a hit. What am I going to do? I'm going to work. I'll probably spend a little time at the gym. This afternoon I'm going to visit an elderly friend in the hospital. I invest for the long haul. I am pretty well diversified. I will not panic.
I'm in the Sheriff's Retirement Fund, and PERS-LE(Public employees retirement system) paid for by the state, never had a problem in over 100 years of using this system. So is the wife (in PERS) and we have several other things going such as defered comp, and a few CDs and other things. Also got a tad bit Social Security (what a joke) coming to me when I retire though I doubt I'll ever see it.

Wait a minute. Let's go with your scenario. They wouldn't send him a bill any more than Bear Stearns employees will receive a bill. They might have to dissolve but the debt won't be passed onto the employees or recipients.

Big problem here is there are no promotions becasue all the retired people are rehired and double dipping, don't care about the younger generation coming up now (40 and 50 somethings) who'll be retiring. Its to political and everything is done for friends, we got a Judge that retired in 95 or 96, he's in his 80s and was rehired as a supervisor in the prosecutors office and he does nothing, the sheriff has two legal advisors (made up jobs because the prosecutors office does all this for im) that are retired lawyers, the Col. on the raod patrol retired after 38 years of service as was rehired to run the patrol division, we got a judges wife(67 years old) taking a job up becasue she doesn't wanna sit at home and be board so the young people can't get a foot in the door, here in cincinnati (the armpit of the U.S.) there is no advancemnt unless your one of the good ole boys in the political party running the show or a suck up to the man in charge of your job. Its disgusting, I have nothing against the retirees, elderly or whatever, but when you retire then you should be go, relax and enjoy retirement, that I think hurts our econemy (here) because the younger generation is leaving here to find jobs elsewhere, in another 5 years Cincinnati will be like Detroit.
And if you read MW post to me, I'll be leaving here if I get that job, its a fresh start, room for advancement, my PERS-LE rolls over and the wife can practice there also.

Well, there would be two wouldn't there? The derivative that the fund invested in and those employees that have invested in the fund. Two different contracts but I wasn't certain which you were referring to.
The derivatives have the money that was invested. No harm to them.
On the employee side, I don't know how government pensions work to be honest. I don't know if ERISA covers them or not or if there is some other entity in place. If not, their pension is gone. Wouldn't be the first time that happened and won't be the last.

It's not all that different from Social Security. The government has been spending those funds for decades and we know at some point the broken program has to be fixed. But what if it dissolves? Congress finally has the brass nuggets to do something? I worked my whole life with the understanding I'd never have SS to rely on. I actually believe I will be able to draw it but it wasn't my only cushion, nor was my pension. Folks have to get out of the mind set that someone else is going to look out for them. They have to plan for themselves and ensure THEY do something positive so they have some reserve if they need it.

Get rid of welfare and put that money to work somewhere else. The whole welfare system needs a revamping, it is my belief that welfare is a reward for laziness, it should only go for the elderly, and the mentally and physically disabled. Other than that get a frig'n job, you gotta flip burgers at two different burger joints then so be it, but I shouldn't have to pay for your lifestyle with my hard earned money. What about lottery's, it was here in Ohio supposed to help the schools, schools ain't seen a penny, more and more corrupted politics everywhere you turn.

Now that really hurts!! Get a job??? Ain't no WAY. I have too much to do to find time. You should understand it takes years of practice to learn how to relax. When I was getting paid I still managed to find time for an afternoon nap, practice for retirement took close to 30yrs to get it right. You need to learn to stop and smell the neighbor's roses and relax.
