    Default Summer trips

So where are you guys all heading for your summer survival trip, or plain old camping this year? Any skills in particular you're hoping to practice?

I haven't gone backpacking in years, just always on paddle trips, so in August I'll trade my kayak for the backpack and go hiking in Kluane National Park (SW Yukon). Gonna be interesting to go camping somewhere where there's people for a change.

Looks like a great area. Looking forward to a full trip report. This summer it'll be mostly day hikes for me.

I hope the old shoulders are back in time for the jamboree. I missed last years and don't want to miss another one. Some beautiful country there that's for sure.

    Showoff.

I found somewhere to do a little 'not campsite' camping for a long weekend at some point this summer, I'll be packing in everything I need, before I'm over yonder in October.

I am taking 4 of my kids, with my dad and FIL backpacking on the 26th, 27th and 28th this month. Should be fun, for the kids at least. Keep us posted on your trip. I would love to hear about it.

Oh the Kluane area is gorgeous! I had originally planned a back packing trip for this weekend but I postponed it for two weeks so I could see a friend of mine's son who is coming to visit and play fiddle. Only skills I'm planning on practicing are fiddle playing out on the tundra and flying a kite hahahah. What kind of food are you thinking of bringing?

Oh, you guys are having a forum meeting? That should be fun!
@Winnie - hey, to me, the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District and Scottish Highlands are just as beautiful. Not-campsite-camping sounds good!
@1stime - fiddling and flying a kite simultaneously?
Food will be my usual homemade, dried stuff: pea soup, chili, jerky, rice, granola bars and a couple 2min soups (not homemade). Got to get used to packing a backback again! I went hiking in the Pyrenees this spring and almost collapsed under the weight of my pack. I got so used to just throwing extras into the kayak because you don't feel the weight there, but when you gotta carry it all...or maybe it's just old age setting in.

Lol now that would be a trick wouldn't it? No, not at the same time.

@ Wildwoman - this will be our fourth get together. The firs was in Indiana, second in Tennessee, third in Kentucky and this year we are shooting for Cumberland Gap National Park.

Nice topic. I/we have been out 6 or 7 times for one or two nighteers and I find myself fussing with the fire mostly. Scraping tinder, splitting bits, trying different SHTF type tiners (birch bark, hand sanitizer etc) and practicing with the ferro rod I have to make sure wjen I NEED it to work, I will have the skills down pat. Otherwise I keep working on my carry items and the bag or pack I will end up with out of my collection of way too much stuff. lol

The best advice I can give you on fire is to gather up your firewood before you start on the fire. Gather up as much as you can possibly haul. Stand back. Look it over then say out loud, "Ain't near enough." Then gather twice as much.
