    Default Review of Winters' Knife.

Well, now I've moved and settled, I thought I'd better do a quick review of the Knife I won in the DOC raffle.
The blade is a good shape for general use and it holds it's edge well. I don't abuse knives and it is yet to have a serious test out camping. That should be resolved in September. Unfortunateley I have to be careful because of the stupid knife laws in this country.
The handle is really good for me as it is not too thick, I have little hands and struggle to find knives I can hold properly. Oh and the 'pants' were pretty spiffy too!
The only problem I have and maybe one of you knife making chaps can answer this, is the resin of the stringcarta still gives off an odour. Any ideas?

Overall, Winter makes a dandy pointy thing.

The micarta that I make will give off the fiberglass odor for a while - maybe a week or more. It does grow "fainter" as time goes by and eventually has no odor. I'm surprised that after this amount of time there is still an odor.

    Thanks for the review Winnie.

As for the resin smell, I'm puzzled. I just got a strange look from my daughter as I sniffed a knife handle. One I cast 3 weeks ago has no smell.

    Winnie,

Noting your stated location I absolutely MUST ask: Do you speak Middle English?

Only after a few pints, Daniel, then I'm fluent in several imaginary languages. Have actually been to the Eagle and Child pub where the Inklings used to meet. Very odd little place, the beer is awful.

Winnie - is the resin wrap at all tacky to the touch?

What are ya thinking crash? In my head, I have thought of maybe a contaminant in the mix. Not enough hardener (but any amount of hardener will harden it, it just takes longer). The cordage breaking down from the resin, but it's natural hemp twine.

Winnie, my only suggestions would be more finger grease, vegetable oil (no petrol), or wax to stop the smell. Just coat it and wipe off excess. Wax may need a hairdryer to remove enough wax.

DN - Have you noticed there are no Irish sailors only British? It didn't start out that way but once the Irish sailors found the rum barrel the British would hear an occasional splash and by the time they got to the New World there were no Irish sailors on board. Hard to walk on a rolling ship when drunk you know. You get tilted in one direction and you just keep going.

Nope the handle is solid no tackiness, I'll try the wax, perhaps it's because it's not been handled enough.

Oh and Daniel, ever had a Depth Charge? Pint Guinness drop in a shotglass Irish Whiskey(my preference is Bushmills) Enjoy. Middle English follows quite soon.

I was thinking bad hardener. I had a tube that, no matter how much I used, the micarta would not set up. I just tossed a slab that sat for 6 months and seemed to be OK, but when I sliced it up, the interior was still a little tacky and gave off a distinctive fiberglass odor. In all of the micarta that I've done I only experienced this with one tube of hardener.

Winne, we call that a carbomb (Guiness with a shot of whiskey that has a touch of bailey's floated on it). I used to down those things like it was water. Damn I want a Guiness now
