Thanks Winnie. In the 70's I did several patrols out of Guam. As we left Apra Harbor we crossed over the trench. It was a whoooooooooole lot deeper than I've ever been.

I was following them on their tweet page. This is a pretty amazing achievement. When he crossed 25k feet I was thinking..."Hey guys. Remind me again. Where did we put the bathroom?"

It's also amazing that this is only the second time that somebody has been to the bottom of the trench, with the first being in 1960. I wonder how long it will be before an Atmospheric Dive Suit will be made to go that deep (current record about 2000 feet).

It fascinated me. The forces on that little thing nust have been tremendous. I would imagine sailing over the Trench is one of those keep the Head clear moments!

That was one of the great things about leaving port from Guam. Before a submarine dives there are certain water depth requirements for safe, peace time maneuvering. Most of the ports have fairly long surface transits before the boat can dive. Once you leave Apra Harbor you are crossing the Mariana Trench....plenty of water. Short surface transit and regular underway routine is a good thing.

I've been over the trench a few time myself; as a Marine aboard gator freighters. And as far as Guam goes, Dave tell them what G.U.A.M. really means.

I watched that video half expecting to see a great big bath tub stopper somewhere there and the guy wondering aloud if he should pull it out...

Shouldn't be too big of a worry. The trench is a little over 6 miles deep. The earth's crust is about 1800 miles deep. We can probably rip and tear some more. That bath tub stopper thing would bother me some, though. Can you imagine the whirlpool? Now, is that clockwise or counter clockwise. Never could get that straight.
