    Default Epic Fail!!

Jefferson County Kentucky ( Louisville) endured a tornado today, without ANY warning whatsoever, they local news channels are saying that the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning until AFTER it struck the area and as a consequence none of the local news channels issued a warning either!

How crappy is that??? From the pics there is some major damage there

I've heard about that happening, sucks when the only warning method fails. The weather man should have known what was going on at least and told people. Our weather man in my home town will tell people to go to their basements if he see tornado sign even if a warning has not been issued...

There's always the possibility it formed with not enough time to issue a warning.

It sucks, but weathermen are expected to see the future. Some warning beats no warning.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

It is for this reason that I think the real research that storm chasers do is so important. Not the thrill seekers mind you, but those that are actually collecting and analyzing data. Hopefully better methods of predicting and warning will come out of it.

These things can form without much warning at all. People are so removed from nature.
If the sky gets dark and the birds and insects go quiet, I know a doozy thunderstorm is on the way.
If it gets 'green' out there, we are likely to get hail, or high winds, or both with that thunderstorm. That's local though. And with last year's tornado, I keep a better watch now.
I used to have a barometer. Thinking about getting another. Low pressure and falling fast is usually a major storm (again local).

Wouldn't a personal barometric sensor give an indication? I don't say that to be critical, but analytical. This is low on my priority list, but there is a barometric gauge in hunting camp that is monitored closely every year ( for a somewhat different reason ). I do watch it during severe thunderstorms at home. Thoughts?

Rick, this seems to be exactly what happened, the conditions really did not indicate a tornado, and even when it happened the "funnel" was very loosely formed,it simply dropped down out of the cloud and then back up several times, neither time forming a tight enough funnel to stay on the ground for long.

Lowkey and ITN - You guys want a barometer? You can have my neck. I can be spot on in a change in pressure every time. Ouch.

I bought a chip for my Yaesu VX-6 radio that gives me the barometric pressure. Kinda handy when you're out actually.

The automated 911 calls that go out when severe weather is coming, never gets around to calling us until after the storm is passed. Maybe because we are close to the end of the alphabet. It's why I rely on forecasts and if it looks like it will be bad, we keep the weather radio on.
Remember, Tornado "watch" means that conditions are favorable for development. That means eyes on the sky. Don't wait until there is a warning to start getting ready. Our tornado kit doesn't include much except a first aid kit, flashlight, a little food, and a change of underwear. It's one of those cases where it's better to get out fast.
If it's happening at night, we sleep with our shoes on.
