Bulow Creek and Plantation

In our quest to visit every State Park in Florida, Mrs. Crash and I explored Bulow Creek and Plantation on Saturday. The plantation came about in 1821 and covered 4,675 acres. Sugar cane, cotton, rice and indigo were the crops on the plantation. The plantation was burned and destroyed in 1836 during the Second Seminole War. There are some great "older" Live Oaks in the area. Live oaks were sought after in the building of sailing ships of the period where the long curved limbs would be used for the ribs and knees. One particular tree, the Fairchild Oak , is about 70 or 75 fee tall with it's branches reaching out over 300 feet. That tree is estimated to be between 400 and 500 years old.

The structure with the tarp over it is the remains of the spring house. A spring ran through it, keeping the temperatures rather cool, allowing for food storage and preservation.

There was a strong "decomp" odor as you approached the spring house. Looking inside, I discovered what was causing it.
