    Default best offordable sleeping bags?

Hey everybody, I am going to be doing some backpacking in yosemite and surrounding areas which means I'll be in the high sierras and pretty chilly at night, I am from kentucky where even at night it feels like it 1,000 degrees outside so I haven't had to worry about having a super warm sleeping bag in the summer. Also I am broke as all hell so I was kind of wanting to spend 100 dollars or less. I was wondering if anybody knew of the best bag for my buck? Please and thank yall!

All I can tell you is I don't miss KYs 1,000 degree nights and mornings. You shouldn't wake up at 4:30 am , go outside in PT shorts, and already be sweating your *** off. Big 5 specials, perhaps?

I am thinking itll get down in the 30s and 40s at night. But I would like one that goes down to around 15 or so. Better safe than sorry.

If money were no object, I would highly recommend Big Agnes. They make light, warm, bags and the ground mats are awesome.

Second choice, a surplus mummy. Here's ya a link.

The third thing you want to think about is weight. Cheap and warm is usually heavy so keep an eye out on the weight of the bags. Read through the information at REI about choosing a bag. It will help you make a better informed decision.

The warmer they keep you, the higher the cost. I'd recommend looking at a bag in the 15-35 degree range.

    Here's an option.
    How about this?

You can also check sites like CAMPMOR out and find some good discounts right now.

What time of year? Summer? Spring? Fall? Winter?

When we lived in Los Angeles, we owned a vacation cabin on the western slope of the Sierra, in Tulare County at about 6,000' altitude. I have seen -15° F. at night there in February. I've seen snow at the cabin on Memorial Day.

Enjoy the Sierra as it is a beautiful mountain range ... but don't ever take the Sierra for granted. Weather can change on you very, very quickly up there. Be prepared.

Yosemite is tricky especially in spring and summer , its not unheard of for really cold days in the summer even snow!! If I were you I would spend closer to $150 -$200 for a light weight bag in the 0 degree range! Better safe than sorry!

I've never been in the Sierras. Spent most of my camping/hunting time in the Rockies. For summer weather I use a 25* down bag from Kelty. I paid $100. My wife has a 20* down bag, also from Kelty, for which we paid $80 from Recreation Outlet. (They have a website; just google them.)

I've been plenty warm most of the time. On the rare occasion when it's been a little cooler, a Hot Hands handwarmer or two (1 placed at my feet and one at waist level) in the bag has made it plenty warm.

Campmor is clearancing their Kelty down bags right now. $120 to $130 range (instead of $200+). I just bought the Lightyear 20F down womens for my wife.

Looks like all the folk that do not like KY run off the Kalifornia.

In contrast, those of us that love living in KY, using pistol grips, normal mag releases and hi-capacity magazines, would not cross the Kalifornia border if our lives depended on it!

Wonder if there is a constant that causes that?

Wally world has -5 degree mummy bags 2 for $40.00. I picked a couple up. It was too good to pass up at that price.

Pretty much all sleeping bags have a little bit of "fudge factor" built into their temperature rating systems but, the Wally World specials (and others like them) are especially prone to this. I don't know who does their ratings but, whoever it is has ice running through their veins.

I find that these cheap bags are usually off by as much as 30* to 40* in how they rate the bag and what temps the bag is actually comfortable. So, your -5* bag is really probably more of a 25* to 35* bag at best.

That doesn't mean their worthless but, don't go off on any arctic camps relying on them to keep you warm and safe.

Also look to see if it has a C or an F after the temperature......could make a BIG difference.
